Question..

I've never seen this, but have been told it's the story of how Rochester met Bertha. However, in the cast list it only has "Antoinette". Can someone help please? Thanks x

The first Mrs. Rochester is born with the name "Antoinette Cosway".

When her father dies and her mother remarries a Mister Mason, then she beceomes "Antoinette Mason".

Upon marrying Mr. Rochester she becomes "Antoinette Rochester".

Later Rochester renames her "Bertha" (a name more fitting of a proper English wife than "Antoinette").

The changes in her name are symbolic of the gradual destruction of her identity - and also symbolic of the destruction of her culture by the forces of colonialism.

However, in Brontë's novel, Jane Eyre, her name is Bertha Antoinetta Mason. Jean Rhys changed these facts in her novel WSS.
