Was she crazy or did he drive her crazy?

I watched this movie a few time and always wonder if she was insane or crazy. He seem to be the driving force behind her supposed mental breakdown. Maybe I am missing something in the film, because it seem to me she was fine till that guy showed up putting ideas in his head. What does anyone else think?

I think that's the point - you have to make the decision. In JANE EYRE Rochester tells Jane that Antionette was crazy and everyone around her knew it. Rochester was tricked into marrying her. Before the marriage the various servants and relatives made sure they were never left alone together. The chaperones were there to make sure he didn't find out the truth.

Jean Rhys wrote WSS as a response to this and to show us Antionette's side of the story. While it's still suggested that there was "madness" in the family, the suggestion is definitely that she was a vulnerable young girl who was driven mad by her treatment by Rochester.

Have you read both books? It's definitely worth it.

In Jane Eyre his story is somewhat different from this movie (book). I think any woman would go crazy if her new husband started treating her like Rochester did. Being locked in a room at Thornfield wouldn't help either. This movie shows him as being cruel and while he is brooding in JE I do like the way he treated Jane except for the bigamy of course.
