Am I the only one getting tired of this??

OK, I admire John Leguizamo as an actor and Rosie Perez got some nice titties, but am I the only one tired of seeing movies in Mexican/Mexican-American settings with no real Mexicans?? Not sure about Yul Vazquez, but Im almost positive he's Rican and I dont think Carlos Sanz is Mexican with the accent I've seen him use on TV. What im saying is, how are you gonna put a movie in East L.A. and have a cast like this?? Its nothing against people who can act, but im tired of seeing so many Mexican/Chicano characters being played by Ricans, Cubans, etc.

what does it matter they all hispanics anyway

reply

I understand your complaint, and Americans too often lump all hispanics under one label rather than recognizing that Puerto Ricans are not Mexicans, etc.

That said, it is not just a hispanic phemomenon. Brits play Americans all the time and vice versa. Russell Crowe (Australian) has played American, Brittish, even Spanish! Actors are actors, period. They're job is to play people who are not them, and sometimes that includes countries of origin. I am an actor myself, and I have played German, Irish, American, and South African.

But that's just my two cents.

absolutely, as long as the actors do the job and look credible its ok.
could never do a period piece under other circumstances, unless digging up some romans or maya or whatever
take a look at cliff curtis who is maori actually and is booked for all kinds of ethnics including armenian, yugoslavian, latino, and he's doing it well enough most of the time.

My God, this was an awesome film and you have this kind of nitpick? Get real. Who cares (except you, of course). IMHO, you sound racist.

I loved this film, too, and don't understand all the 4s and 5s.

Bobby Cannevale (Agent Steve Petrelli) played Iranian in "The Station Agent." Please, this is an indie movie for no money. Funny thing is, last night at my 4th of July party a bunch of movie-buffs were going on about Carlos Mencia and what a great Mexican-American comedian he is, and were SHOCKED to learn his real name is Ned and he is Columbian.:-p It is showbusiness, and the business is telling a story we will pay to see!

reply

Carlos Mencia has a Mexican mother and Hondurian father.

Yes, I'll take your word for it, and his real name is Ned. Thanks for the clarification, my apologies to all Colombians.:-)

But who's to say that they were playing Mexicans? Last time I checked, there were Puerto Ricans living in LA, and every where else. Just as there are Mexicans living in the northern US.
