anyone else notice that the idol was nothing more that an idol of cthulhu?

I loved the remake of the original because they made an actual attempt to make the fans of said film happy while trying to pull in the new fans. but this? I get the whole "ghosts are angry" thing, wouldn't you be? but making the inside all fleshy around this idol in a room that no references are made to at all ever...

If you just want to watch something that you don't want to remember in two hours, have at it i guess.
