I Love him. Vannacutt is my favorite doctor after Herbert West.

But this movie sucked the awesome right out of Vannacutt. When the HoHH came out I thought he was one of the most frightening horror creations out there, the sort of stop motion way he moved, that inquisitive, maliscious look on his face, the freaky spasms and just the pure evil of him as a human being. That was what made Vannacut scary to me.

With this movie they just didn't manage it, he just walked around like a normal person but occassionally he would flicker and that was about it. That's not scary. Also, a statue made him do it? What the hell, nice way to invalidate the horror of HoHH. The idea was that Vannacut was just an evil bastard, completely human, that's why he was such a great villain, having him under the influence of a demon totally ruined that.

Exactly, first movie freaked me out when I was a kid because we all know crazy doctors DO exist, who do horrible things in the name of 'science' and 'progress', and in those days probably several of them tried freaky shlt like that. But to say a statue made him do it...takes any and ALL terror out of it. And IF the statue made him do it, WHY after it was out of the asylum did the patients all ambush Vannacutt since it wasn't his fault?
