So why didn't the Darkness from the first film appear in this?

To understand what I'm talking about, look at this:

That ghostly...thing wasn't destroyed at the end of the first movie (it was just evaded), so why didn't it appear to attack Desmond, Ariel, Dr. Hammer, Kyle, etc. or at the very least try to protect the Baphomet Idol from being taking and dropped down into the sewer by the humans? It was perhaps the biggest and scariest threat in the first movie and I felt that its absence was a bit of a disservice in this sequel.
