WTF love scene

Seriously, first they're about to set the house on fire with those candles and flowy drapes. Then they start cuddling and having sex.

AND THEN IT STARTS RAINING INSIDE THE HOUSE???

Was this supposed to be some sort of metaphor or something? Bad sprinkler system? Why the heck wouldn't you stop and say, hey, the entire house is being ruined?

reply

LOL. Bad sprinkler system. Not going to lie, I thought it was very weird too. It was like why? Why is this happening. I am sure it was some sort of metaphor or symbol but I just don;t know what. It still a pretty good love scene..

I'm with yall. I believe there was metaphor to the rain. I'm not familiar with symbols like that so I can't decipher what it meant.

Perhaps somebody who is into literature/poetry can tell us what it means...eventually.

Um yes, I think I can clear this up or at least offer my offer my interpretation of it. I saw the movie a few weeks ago but I think I remember the gist of the scene. Yeah, the rain is kind of both a symbol and metaphor at the same time.

1. Since the entire story is a flashback from Danny's point of view at the art show, he can color the scenes in his mind in whatever way he wants. It's how he figuratively remembers it happening. And so for him it was such a beautiful and emotional moment and Danny is a painter so it makes sense that this is how it would be colored in his mind. Since it is Danny's p.o.v. Carter is more prevalent than anything else in the scene. In that moment Carter at his most beautiful to Danny, and he is also stripped of all his pretense and fear. I think that the rain represents that bareness, the stripping away of everything keeping them apart. All their fear and anger and feelings of being lost and being outcasts at school falling away. So metaphorically, the rain water works as a cleansing symbol to wash away all of the hurt and leave them emotionally naked for each other

2. Metaphorically, the rain can communicate the intensity of Danny's love for Carter; he feels as if he's being soaked in it.

3. This could be a stretch, but Danny's feelings for Carter in the scene almost have a religious quality to them, as if he sees Carter as something of a God to him, and he has always been kind of in awe of him, so the water could be like Danny's baptism of sorts for Carter. If that makes any sense? Water has frequently been used to symbolize rebirth.

4. Also, both characters and viewers would probably agree that Carter appears at his most honest when he is swimming, and in the pool scene Carter verbally identifies himself with water. So in the simplest sense, water just symbolizes Carter.

5. Remember, at the moment that he is remembering his time with Carter, Danny is showcasing a set of watercolor paintings in which Carter is the star, so you could think of the images in the paintings just being literally being transposed onto Danny's memory.

6. Danny's character is reliving the story in his mind with the foresight of knowing what is going to happen to Carter in the end. His current boyfriend alluded to the fact that ever since Carter's death, Danny has mentally placed him on a pedestal so looking back it makes sense that everything he remembers about Carter would be exaggerated and every moment would seem more meaningful then it may have really been at the time, when he thought that they would have forever. It was his first love so it was extremely intense for him and it was with a very broken but confident person who unexpectedly accepted his and so he idolized him. Add to this the passion of the scene. There are just a ton of emotions at work here that the rain, the music, and the colors are there to intensify.

There are just so many ways that this scene could be interpreted but I hope I was able to clearly touch upon a few for you guys! The last reason that I think the rain was incorporated is because it was just so gorgeous visually. Personally, I thought that Kyle Clare was at his sexiest when he was drenched. And it worked seamlessly with the music. It's a beautiful movie and I think this scene takes it to the next level. And this is just my interpretation! I would look for interviews with the real Danny Wheeler to find out his intentions.

Your interpretation of the love scene is exactly what I intended.

One thing though, there is no real Danny Wheeler. There's just me. Writer/Director and these amazing actors. Glad you liked the scene.

oh wow thanks! And sorry about that mixup. I must have read something online that said it was a true story. Well, I think what you created is really lovely.

What a great film! Just finished watching it, still have tears in my eyes :'(

@savigliotti: Thank you for your thoughts and interpretations! I haven't seen some of these aspects so far ...

In addition, I see the rain in two further aspects (which both may be a stretch, of course...;):

You're never exposed to the rain while staying in your house, your shell, your closet - but only if you're out: I see the rain as a symbol for both of the characters (but especially Carter) being out at least for the other. Somehow as the beginning of something real and honest, a "first step out".

And, as a more simple view: water is an essential element of their rather different interests (-> movie title), if not the only intersection. Exposing the guys to it so heavily is somehow emphasizing the security for both and the mutual way of feeling in that scene.

@Oliveras: you created the most beautiful and intense "love scene" I've ever watched so far. Thank you so much for that great movie!! (I'm still discovering something new in it - the scale demanded it...;)

[Sorry for my poor English]

Why ask why? It is an art film! Enough said.

While there's much to recommend this film, especially some of the acting, the script could really have used a large dose of "less is more." Too much is spelled out and hammered home with a mallet. Much of the emotions were over-the-top. Emotion is often more powerful in a scene when the character is fighting against it. We, as the audience, will understand.

This is easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting was so horrible it defies description. How can so many people put so much time and money into a project and come up with crap like this? The sex/rain scene was ludicrous. I guess it is just a bad "B" movie. And most "B" movies by definition are not worth watching. Save your time, save your money, go spend two hours on Tumblr, it will be much more satisfying than this abomination.
