Can't wait to see what Hou Hsiao-Hsien does next.

Loved his Tokyo story. Loved this Paris.

I hope he makes a New York film. Maybe he can redeem Wong Kar Wai's failed attempt to make an American movie.

I loved Le Voyage Du Ballon Rouge. I don't understand why people would go see this film if they are unfamiliar with Hou's work. There was a very strange demographic at the Paris Theater in New York this evening. This is a Hou Hsiao-Hsien film. By definition. What was/is everyone expecting?

I could sit through another viewing just to appreciate the masterly masterly camera movement. Or just to watch Juliette Binoche. And the touchstone details: the piano movers; the piano tuner; Richart chocolate. And there was one shot where the buildings reflected off the taxi windshield changed axes. Scary beautiful.

This movie made me feel nostalgic for my youth and for my old age, as well as the little happy little sad. Saudade. That's a nice feeling.

Reflections on the train. Very nice.

At least I have cinema.

I was expecting a red balloon, following a little boy through Paris, with a clear plot.
I got all but one.
What the hell was the point of the movie, I see myself asking.

To subtly express something about the human condition through beautiful images and great performances.

ce n'est pas une image juste, c'est juste une image

"I don't understand why people would go see this film..."
"What was/is everyone expecting?"

Seriously?

I think we were all expecting to see a film.

No sign said "Only suitable for people who already have seen and enjoyed Hou's work". No sign said "Beware: no plot, no characters".

We went in with an open mind, living up to our end of the bargain, but the filmmakers did not live up to theirs.

I will be taking your implied advice, and avoiding any more films from Hou. I have better things to do.

rofl you say you went in with an open mind and then criticize it for not meeting the superficial standards you've created for films. u is dum guy

This film surely HAS plot and it HAS characters. Perhaps you have never seen a real non-narrative film in your life. Now stop reading Syd Field.
