I haven't been so bored in a film in a very long time......

That says more about you than in does about the film.

At least I have cinema.

I have to agree with bugaloos. This movie lacks focus: the scenes are random, and the plot floats around like the recurring balloon. Some would say that's exactly what the film wants to be. I say this kind of attempt to make a 'poetic' film is a bit too easy. Also, the pseudo-postmodern reflexivity really got on my nerves.
A real balloon is more exiting, and cheaper.
Check out the Belgian production 'Any way the wind blows' by Tom Barman: that's how this type of film (finding beauty in everyday life) should be made.

I completely agree with you. My mother is prone to taking me to see foreign films which I usually end up liking but I could not stay awake through this movie, literally I fell asleep. French is my first language so it was obviously not a problem for me, I just didn't care at all about the characters or the plot. ANd it was way too long, ever heard of editing! my god

I just got home from watching this film with my French professor, her family, and some other students from our class. I will have no trouble going to sleep, that's for sure! The film was a little (ok, a lot) too disjointed for my taste. The piano was such a focal point, but I didn't understand how it related to the balloon. Nor did I get why the tenant or the sister were even in the story at all. Their presence did nothing to further the story line in my opinion. In addition, the title suggests that the balloon is the centerpiece of the story, but it really is an adjunct that is missing for a large chunk near the beginning of the film. The one good thing that I can say is that I really enjoyed the Parisian street scenes because they reminded me of all the time I've spent in my favorite city.

I usually like French films but this is taking the arty farty thing to extremes.

reply

I agree that this film was just too boring.

reply

You people are too lazy, and not very used to use your brains, that's why you find it boring... go see transformers, and be happy, and leave good movie for smart people.

reply

Smart people use arguments.

reply

I don't see any arguments here, on either side.

ce n'est pas une image juste, c'est juste une image

reply

No, I found it boring because nothing happened. Don't be so self-impressed. There are valid reasons for liking and disliking any film. You don't need to belittle people just because they disagree with you.

I'll just say why I like the movie. I can relate to Binoche completely in terms of her crazy life and trying to make things work for her. She sees in Simon her dream life - serene, happy, calm, zen-like. She's almost envious of him and finds comfort in his calmness.

Agreed it's a hard watch, but it had a very peaceful effect on me. I appreciated it for just that. Didn't expect no Tarantino flick :-)

Sorry, people obviously forgot to warn you about the lack of explosions and chase scenes before you went to watch it. :P

OK, granted, it's an acquired taste, perhaps. But it's a beautiful film. Not every film has to go at 100 miles an hour, there's a place for movies which can take their time and give you a chance to think about what you're watching, while you're watching them.

Each to their own, but it's a shame you couldn't appreciate what was really an excellent film.

I agree that this movie was very slow and had me fighting to stay awake. I was looking forward to see this as The Red Balloon (1956) is one of my favorite films of all time and I am a big fan of Juliette Binoche, but it was lacking any kind of wonderment. I even thought Juliette Binoche was great in it, but seeing that red balloon in this movie just didn't evoke the same feelings that the classic short film still does.

Nice try but it didn't work.
