Potential squandered

Just watched this and took me three goes to get through it, and agree all these 10 star Tarantino-esque modern masterpiece reviews are likely from people involved with the movie. However am surprised to also see the odd review around with the same high rankings, but when they praise Giles for his superb performance am suspicious.

The thing is it had alot of potential, that I felt was squandered.

Pros:
It had a very dark sexy look to it right from the start and the strip club and Ruby looked hot! But also agree to the very True Romance hooker/pimp/kill/address setup.
Interesting twist on the junkie addict.
Madman transition from pathetic girls lapdog to deranged psycho was great with his first vamp scene being very, very disturbing.
The nightmares were well done.
The sort of Shakespearean twist at the end.

Cons:
Editing, 20 mins could have been culled of mopy melodrama and excessive dream sequences.
Psycho needed to dial down the ham & cheese.
Giles obviously there for the Angel comparisons looked the part but was woeful even sounded like was dubbed on occasion.
Soundtrack was very poor eg. the single piano notes, for a dark sensual horror essential to have a great score, perhaps cost issue hence plagiarizing others work.
Silly elements like chain on bathroom door, attacking intruder with a phone book, pitch black hospital, regeneration leaving scars, "tearing people faces off" never happened and would probably need to be gruesome to draw blood without fangs.

So I would be very interested in a sequel, without or with a much improved Giles, as all the elements where there and could be again just needs quite a bit of a polish perhaps learned from this being a first movie.
