Sucked.

Why is it that every sack of indie crap I've pissed 1.5 hours of my life away on this month lacks an ending?

The first hour sucked and WASN'T funny. It then became somewhat intriguing and recaptured my full attention. Afterwards, it ended with a dreadful thud reminding me that I've pissed away yet even more time.

It's infuriating that we take our time in front of this work only to be brought to a conclusion such as this. Rack it up to the pile of half written, overrated "love it because it's obscure" garbage from the great year of 2007.

Agreed, it did capture my attention in some parts but eventually I found myself fast forwarding the singing bits just to get to the inevitable ending which I agree was done really poorly.

Overall a dissapointment.

also agree. this film had nothing at all to say, and i laughed one time in 1.5 hours. i watch a lot of films of all genres, and i hardly come across anything where i really wish i had my time back. this one goes in that category.

So, wait a second. In watching a film that has characters exploiting people's dreams and naivete (no doubt built up by TV shows like "American Idol") because they themselves have no real goals beyond getting by, you somehow come to the conclusion that it has nothing to say?
As far as laughs go, I would agree that they are few and far between, but I think that's on purpose. Much like the show that inspired it ("American Idol"), it starts with laughs- often at the expense of well meaning people- then quickly devolves into cold, hard reality, in which dreams cannot be achieved simply through sincerity alone.
The film has great, realistic acting, some truly moving musical moments, and an ending that, whether you consider it unsatisfying or not, truly reflects the reality of the story. Just like the musical artists in the film, our main character realizes that he is back to square one after being suckered in by the promise of big money fast.
The ending isn't happy, true. Maybe that's because it wasn't supposed to be.
