Hated It

I watched this last night on PBS and couldn't finish it. If you have seen the animated one from the early 80s directed by Mark Hall and Chris Taylor I don't think you will enjoy this one much. It was annoying, pretty stupid, I did not enjoy this at all. The sets and scenery were great, but it just seemed ridiculous to me to have grown men acting like fools. It wasn't even filmed in England, not to mention it was boring. I already knew the story, and knew what to expect, but this was just a big disappointment.

I actually like it. The one thing I did find annoying was Toad. Too much of the samething over and over. The acting was bit corny as well. All in all I really enjoyed it.

I didn't much care for it, either. I found it concentrated too much on the slapstick and not enough on the whimsy. The book also had such a wonderful sense of the miracle of nature, of the seasons of the river, and of a deity. The writing was so poetic, with a touch of melancholy. This film made heavy-handed use of the humor. Plus, the bit with the laundress was icky; didn't seem to fit in a program that kids would enjoy.

I suggest you get the one that came out in the early 80s, the one produced by Crossgrove Hall. It is brilliant. I used to watch it on the Disney channel when I was a kid and they brought it out on DVD recently, the original movie as well as the series that went along with it. Frankly this new version was crap to me. I couldn't even watch the whole thing, it was awful, a complete waste of time. Here is a link to what I am talking about. I have watched it as an adult and it is just as good as back then. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007GP82W
