How they did away with this? Blamed it on the FLN? I mean, they wouldn't really say "they all tried to escape".

(I heard during the Algerian Civil War in the 1990s the FLN government would sometimes butcher a village and blame it on the rebels.)

They were probably counting on the fact the media weren't quite so evident and intrusive in Algeria 1959, as they might be today.

I think the point of the scene, which is reinforced throughout the film, is that war frequently encourages a blood lust that promotes such atrocities on both sides.
