Mortality

This is the film's main theme and it takes a gardener to teach an artist about living and dying. This film is exquisite to look at but it's more than a picture postcard for France. It's a gentle film that shows how two children from the same village school take different directions in life; beneath is the issue of class and how this affected their choices in life. The film really, really reminded me of the novel Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris; a great book and if you enjoyed this film you might consider reading this novel.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

I agree, a beautiful film.

You summed it up perfectly.

Very true Poppy, but it is also a two-way street, with the painter in an undemonstrative fashion repaying the favour and helping the gardener in his own way (E.G. Using his networks to get the son-in-law a new job, taking him on a guided tour of the Louvre to discuss light and darkness in art).
