The Ending (spoilers)

Today I watched three films and two of them I rated 8/10: Daratt and Gone Baby, Gone. The latter film might have gained a higher rating had I like the denouement more and felt less manipulated by a writer intent on playing moral maze with the viewers. Daratt was interesting and challenging and I was unsure how much I cared about it until the end. Atim has been passive-aggressive with Nassara throughout because this man killed his father and Atim's grandfather has charged him with taking revenge and killing Nassara. But Atim cannot bring himself to do so. The one time he aims a gun at Nassara, he closes his eyes. So how can Atim return to his grandfather and honour his family?

By the most subtle sleight of hand Atim returns with Nassara in tow; the latter remains unaware as to whose son is Atim and walks into a trap. Atim takes Nassara to his grandfather and the latter congratulates Atim for doing so and quickly bids Atim kill Nassara in the same manner as his father having addressed Nassara and revealing who they are. Atim appears to co-operate and Nassara prays firm in the belief he will be killed. But Atim fools both men by feigning Nassara's death so that his grandfather believes the deed has done. Only at the last does Nassara realise he will not be killed but his realisation is accompanied by loss as Atim walks away with his grandfather. The loss for Nassara is that he wanted to Atim as his a son. He has faced due reckoning but it is not revenge as such.

And Atim honours his grandfather and his dead father without becoming a murderer. What a great way to resolve this painful dilemma, which stands for the dilemma confronting Chad after 40 years of civil war.

I'm scared of the middle place between light and nowhere
