Me and my date watched this dubbed in french as we are learning french but we missed some parts of the dialogue and I was hoping that someone might explain them to us.
The girl that goes to the hospital before marriage, is she getting an abortion?
Also, why didn't Rose (the old lady) go on her date?
The muslim girl went to hospital to have her hymen restored so her husband would think she was a virgin. Rose didn't go on her date because of her mad older sister. I think Rose felt that she couldn't drag that nice man into her awful life - so she gave up on a chance of happines because of her lack of self-respect.

shareI don't think it was a lack of self respect - she had a commitment to her sister and had to keep it, that came first. I think she gained a lot of respect and self respect from making that decision. She realised it was a choice and she chose her sister and at the end they were dancing and she was happy with her choice.

A great moment on the movie...
I was checking these message boards, in the hopes that someone could explain something that I may have missed. I, too, wasn't exactly sure why Rose didn't go out on her date. I've seen two different interpretations on this board, and thank you very much for that.
I thought this movie started out slow, but then I really, really liked it. I was glad I saw it.
I don't think it was lack of self respect but commitment and compassion/love/sacrifice for her (sister ? ) Lili. Rose was selfless.
I agree the first 15/20 minutes were slow and not much happening but it was moving.

I read an interview with the director/actress Nadine Labaki and she explained that the reason why Rose never went to her date is because she was afraid of what society would think of her. A woman her age dating is something a little bit controversial in a Lebanese society.
I am Lebanese myself and i can understand what she means :)
thanks for that Orangieh. I too believed she was making a choice between having a life of her own and remaining devoted to her sister.
