This Movie Got An Awful Review From Either HBO or Comcast

I have Comcast digital cable, and I happened to turn on The Bucket List tonight. It got only a one star rating. I'm not sure who gives those out. On my Comcast digital cable channel, if a movie is on, at the bottom of the screen they have the movie's name, and one to four stars. I know that the IDMB.com users gave the movie a good rating, and when I saw it in the theater, I enjoyed it. I'm going to watch it again now, which will be my first time since I saw it in the theater last January.

Lol, i was just looking on here to see if anyone else noticed this. this is what it says, "Leaky comic vehicle about two terminally ill old guys, a tycoon and a mechanic, who embark on a things-to-before-i-die road trip." I wonder what they mean by leaky? then again, these ratings are terrible, i remember one day i say a 3 star rating for the Daredevil movie, and then i saw a 2 star rating for Scarface. Who writes these things anyway?

reply

Comcast didn't even give "This Christmas" a rating. It's weird like that. I wasn't going to watch this movie because of the rating, because usually 2 stars means that it's at least watchable. I'm glad I did watch it, though. Good movie. And yeah, what was up with the Scarface rating? They gave the original 4 stars, and that put me to sleep, lol.

By leaky I would think they are saying the plot is full of holes. Like the Racetrack scene...

reply

Sadly, this was the first film I saw in Blu-Ray format.

What a schmaltzy piece of dreck. Huge plot holes, big enough to drive several Mustangs through.

Utter lack of character development.

I found myself more interested in ID'ing which scenes contained CGI/matte backgrounds to simulate foreign locales.

Both Jack and Morgan seemed awfully robust for guys dying of cancer and going through chemo.

I completely did not believe Freeman's rationale for not spending time with his wife while he was dying. Even if his wife and he were not getting along all that well, for chrissakes he had an entire family. And he wanted to ditch them during his final days to go run around the world with Nicholson? WTF?

reply

Plot holes...? Examples? :3 And also they're both two insanely old guys. I'm sure they've developed a lot during their lives. Did you expect them to keep changing at 80+? And even if you did Jack's character changed as much as it could by the end. I think there was a lot of character development.

You think those guys are over 80?

And yeah, the movie sucked. Coming from a big Rob Reiner/Nicholson/Freeman fan.

I have Time Warner and I was also shocked by the rating from HBO. It was the same one star "leaky vehicle". What is with these guys. One star??!! Totally off base. I'm thinking I can't trust the ratings on the cable listings anymore which is a real drag. That had been my first screening then I checked IMDB.

reply

I have Charter and though their ratings are often times... well, also completely wrong, it gave The Bucket List 3 stars. And a decent review, no "leaky vehicles" here.

reply

the leak must have been fixed as now it's 'riotous'. tho, the 1 star remains.

I just watched it on HBO, which gives it two stars. I have to agree with that. It's pretty mediocre. I love Jack and Morgan, but it's just more formulaic Hollywood dreck. I only watched it because I've been to the Himalayas and my friends told me I had to see it. I do agree with the first item on the list: "witness something majestic" and going to the Himalayas. That part is right on!

reply

I'm watching it on HBO right now and they give it 1 star, not 2. Shouldnt matter who your cable provider is either its still HBO. I've given this movie as many chances as i can, i try to watch it everytime its on but through 5 viewings so far IMO this movie is very boring.

I watched it on HBO and my cable is through Charter and it's rated one star. I also remember when it came out it was crushed by the critics. I watched and was very moved by it. I won't go into details but I liked it more than I expected to. I come on to IMDB and see that it has a pretty high rating which I guess I'm not surprised by(I like to think my opinion is similar to the majority). Anyway, the rating was one star but I don't remember the review being anything negatively critical.

And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

It's a pretty crappy film. No reason to really care about any of it. I like a good deal of Reiner's earlier films and have nothing against the two starts- just thought this film sucked.

It's like the execs thought- hey let's make a movie that deals with dying- except it really doesn't. It just has two guys globe trotting with forced dialogue and plot holes.

reply

My biggest issue with the Time Warner Cable rating is that some of the recent movies got no stars at all (ex. This Christmas, Purple Rain, Underdog, hell, they even gave The Last King of Scotland no stars).

Bullets! My only weakness. How did you know?

reply

sagentx2005 basically sumed up how I feel about the film.

It's a pretty bad movie, but I'd think they'd give it at least a two star.

I’ve never read a thread with so many posts that I want to reply to, so I'm doing them all in one post.

I have Comcast digital cable, and I happened to turn on The Bucket List tonight. It got only a one star rating. I'm not sure who gives those out.
My cable provider has its listings available online. When you click on the description of a TV show or movie, you can also rate it. My cable provider gave it a 4 ½ out of 5, and I know that rating is from viewers. I don't know if others do this though.
(Q)I wonder what they mean by leaky? (A) By leaky I would think they are saying the plot is full of holes.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure when reviewers say “leaky” they mean there are moments that can make you cry, or at least get misty. Like the scene where Edward meets the granddaughter he never knew existed, then crosses “Kiss the most beautiful girl in the world” off the list. That made me leaky.
I completely did not believe Freeman's rationale for not spending time with his wife while he was dying.
This was addressed by Edward near the beginning of the film. A lot of people who are dying spend their time comforting others rather than thinking about they want or need. And considering that Carter gave up his career plans because his wife got pregnant, worked hard enough as a mechanic to put all his kids through college, has been married for 64 years, and he is the one who is dying, he should have the right to die the way he wants. He made a comment about not being able to remember what quiet was. I had a friend who found out she was dying of cancer and only had 3 months. She wanted her family to remember her as young and vibrant so she moved into a small apartment by herself to live out the last of her days. And before someone says that's selfish, trust me; it's really, really difficult to watch someone who was once perfectly physically fit and gorgeous shrivel up to nothing while the cancer eats them away. When they die, that's how you remember them. What would you do in that situation?
You think those guys are over 80?
Yes, especially when they say so in the movie. Carter does a voice-over when Edward dies: “Edward Perryman Cole died in May. It was a Sunday in the afternoon and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. He was 81 years old. And Carter tells Edward how young he was when he got married (18) and now long he's been married (64 years).

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. IMO, it depends on your age and whether you’ve experienced someone dying from cancer or other fatal disease. For everyone who posted on this thread, how often have you said “that’s on my bucket list” or “I have to put that on my bucket list.” Even if you didn’t like the movie or thought it was full of plot holes etc., I’ll bet you’ve used the phrase since you watched the movie. That alone makes the movie memorable, doesn’t it?

reply

Crazy what other people notice. I thought there was no way anyone would be here asking about this, but lo and behold. I haven't even seen this yet, but the phrase is used so often regarding pre-death yearnings, that I figure this film must have some merit. So seeing one star was a shock. I, too, am on Time Warner, and I believe they get their reviews from the TV Guide archives. I think it was on dish that they listed (Whoever) Media Services as the provider of the reviews and on-screen listings.
