I'm 200 pages shy of finishing Anna Karenin and

I can honestly say that I've never read anything quite like this. Not that I wasn't prepared to feel as if "I've never read anything quite like this" but... The actual experience is fascinating and the writing seems almost otherworldly. The scope from just these huge and broad societal understandings articulated to perfection to these suddenly minutest and poetic understanding of details leaves me spinning. And from these grave and somber ruminations to this wonderful sense of humor and joy... Just amazing.

Anyhow, I'm seeing The Last Station tomorrow afternoon and am looking forward to it. Especially having read some of the positive reactions on these boards. Haven't seen a good period piece and biopic since Young Victoria last year.

Well, at last a post that was a joy to read (and I admit, I clicked on it with some trepidation! ;). "Anna Karenina" is one of my top three favourite books, so I am glad to see other people appreciate it.

I am assuming you've long since finished it now.
What do you think about it now?

I enjoyed reading your post and Leo Tolstoy is my favorite writer exactly for the reasons you stated. I read Anna Karenin about two years ago, and now I am starting War and Peace. I have read many of his short stories, too. I hope you enjoyed the ending of the book.

I was required to read Anna Karenina my junior year of high school, and since it was mandatory I initially harbored some ill towards the book. However, about 2 chapters in I was completely engrossed. It was a literary workout to say the least, but it paid off. Anna Karenina is one of my favorite pieces of literature and I think I really need to read it again to relive it.

I read Anna Karenina in college and was bored by it. However, when I read it 20 years later, it was a completely different experience. Yes, it is one of my favorite books now (if not THE most favorite).

Accumulation of small victories may lead to big defeat.

Just to warn people, I think there's a huge Anna Karenina spoiler in The Last Station.

I watched it and I'm only in the first 1/3 of the book right now.

Anyway, you might want to save The Last Station until you've finished Anna K if you think this will bother you.

Hmm... sorta spoiler. It's quite well-known what happens as she (Anna) is often used as a literary example of the fated female of the 1800s (Madame Bovary another example).
