question about movie

I loved this movie, but can anyone tell me what the significance of the tree was where meera ties her dupatta? I originally thought that it was for widows to tie a colorful cloth (that they wore in their wedded lives) as a memorial for their husbands...but thats completely conjecture...what is it really? I've never seen that anywhere else in India.

I thought Meera believed that if you wish for something there and you tie a piece of cloth in the tree, then it would come true.

In some of the northern Indian states it is a belief that if a wish is made after tying a thread or a piece of cloth to a tree (usually peepal or banyan) then the wish will come true. It might be any wish for wealth, health, love, etc. Married women often make a wish for their husband's long life.

its got nothing to do with widows. anyone who wants to make a wish can tie a ribbon like cloth to the tree for their wish to come true.
and perhaps you've never seen it anywhere else in india cuz its popular only in some parts, and since india is soooo diverse every ritual differs from place to place.
