Bleeding Hearts

I suppose the term 'bleeding heart' is an emotional retort and is meant to be derogatory. But last night's story (Wednesday) was crap.

It was about some poor soapie "star" who was in Sons $ Daughters (I think that's what it was) about 20 years ago. She found out from her grandson or nephew or whatever that reruns of the show are being broadcast on Foxtel 3 or 4 times per day and she wants a cut of the action. It seems that Grundy's have released DVD sets of the series and she thinks she is entitled to royalties there also.

Apparently she is hopping map about it, is struggling for money, has survived only by the goodness of her daughter and thinks Grundy are making squillions out of it and should send some her way.

I don't supppose it occurred to her to get a job.

My heart bleeds...

I think you have a point, it is a long time ago and maybe she should have moved on and got different work, I did not see the story but it would be intersting to know how much involvement she had with the show, and how much creative energy she put into it.
Sadly, Australian soaps have a reputation for ripping off their actors and they are usually paid very poorly.
Perhaps she does have a point about re-runs and DVD royalties? I can't imagine they would amount to much anyway but when someone has created a role, then there is something more that just a pay check at the end of filming.
Call it bleeding heart if you like, I would prefer to say it is compassion combined with business sense, and ethics.
Perhaps the re-run rights and DVD royalties can be put in a pool and say 15% of the profits made can go to a pool for actors which can be split between the regulars who starred in the production.
I would be interested if you have any further thoughts?

I have an eternal hope.
