Disappointing, lacks polish.

I really wanted to like this. I've read a few books from the Reeves-Stevenses and they've been moderately entertaining, but this show is just.. meh. The whole story feels contrived - it's supposed to be a docu-drama, but the 'action-sequence' plot points really don't work. The soundtrack.. is there one?? The CGI is OK but for a show that cost $20 million, I expected better.

For a show in the same vein, check out Voyage to the Planets: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395417/

Made by the BBC for less than half what Race to Mars cost, with a far more engaging story (and better acting), awesome music and surprisingly good CGI.

This is something you use to educate pupils in a school (by forcing them to watch it) and even then it is so crushingly boring that half of the audience might very well take their own lives.

They should cut about 3 hours to get the pacing right.

Typical of the Discovery Channel. Like the History Channel, their shows are less about science/history/education or art than they are about cheap, mindless entertainment. The BBC is a completely different caliber of programming from the junk Discovery Channel regularly churns out.

The CGI and relatively high production value of this program are undermined by a largely predictable and unengaging plot. The dialog is also uninspired and generally insipid. I'm sure the actors are capable of much better performances, but without decent writing to work with, the program was doomed to mediocrity.

I honestly feel like these programs were made to cater to the lowest common denominator, and consistently underestimate the intellect of program viewers. Maybe one day the genius producers at the Discovery Channel will discover that there's more to good programming than just computer-generated eye candy, stereotypical and one-dimensional characters, and cheesy contrived dialog, all played against the backdrop of cliche plot mechanisms.
