Just WHAT do u mean by "seeing tht its a bollywood movie, it must be copied from..."???

wht do u take the Indian Film Industry for?

As if the being named 'Bollywood' by the media wasn't enough!

As if Hollywood doesnot copy from other languages and takes it as their own by glorifying the stories and making it look more grand!

I don't know what more to say to a person who doesnot respect the IFI.

Turns out the original poster was right, though. Most of the stories here are plagiarized. In 'Matrimony' the affair is with a Lt. Colonel. They can call it 'inspiration' or 'tribute' but it would be nicer if they'd at least acknowledge the authors-- if not pay to acquire the rights. The movie itself was quite watchable, by the way.

Well, Paris Je T'aime is hardly the first film that is comprised of a number of short stories by various directors.

But anyway,

Rise and Fall is a comprised version of Gong Wu

Rice Plate

I originally know this story from a one-page comic, in which it was about a western and a turkish man. I don't know how old that comic is exactly, but at least 19 years old since the comic stopped in that form in 1988. Later I also saw a short film that was almost exactly the same as the comic. Don't remember the name actually.

dont forget Metrimony which is a adaptation of a Roald Dahl short story ..Mrs Bixby and the Colonels Coat

Yes, I also recognized the story from "Gong Wu" (Blood Brothers). Everything was the same. It is quite an effort to cut a story of 90 minutes short in 10 minuteshe indian version doesn't make any sense and I have seen the original version.

"Rise Plate" also reminded me of a story I read twenty years ago about a man who ordered a plate of spaghetti and went to the bathroom,to discover when he came back that a black man was eating his spaghetti,so he thought. When the man looks at the black man,he gives the white man the fork so that he can join him. When the black man leaves he finds out that his plate his still there.
In all fairness this story about prejudice is timeless and was one of the best stories. So I didn't mind the plagiarism.

There is no doubt in my mind that the other stories are copied from older stories or movies. Mostly from Roald Dahl's Tale of the unexpected.

Overall it is a nice change for Bollywood. But I do think they need to come up with original stories and twists.

I taught Rise and Fall was a copy of the korean movie "Friend". Haven't seen Gong wu but if you have seen Friend you know what I am talking about. They even tried to rip the exact same shot ( frame wise ). They couldn't pull it off though.

reply

Well, it has the same kind of look and feel as Friend, but the story is exactly that of Gong Wu. Trust me, I've seen both.

reply

Yeah, when I saw "Rice Plate" and thought back to the comic, it occured to me how it is probably one of those type of stories that are timeless and known all over the world. Ever since I saw the movie, I've been bugging people asking them if they know the story too because I just want to know where it originally came from.

The story of Rice Plate was featured in a dutch commercial 12 years ago, It was about a dutch (western man) who came into a fast food restaurant and ordered his food, he than found himself a table somewhere nice, but he got up and left to get himself a couple of napkins, when he returned he saw a black man sitting at his table eating his food, so he sat down and started to eat with this black man. When they finished he looked up and realised that it was not his food that they were eating. So the story of rice plate is all but original.

But nice to see Indian cinema appreciating a good message even so that they have asked their best actors to portray the roles respectively.

PS: I thought the story of Manoj bhajpai was very nice

There is a variation in "Goodbye and Thanks for all the fish" by Douglas Adams about a guy who buys some food(maybe a pack of biscuits?) at a railway station and is taken aback when the guy sitting across from him helps himself to the biscuits. The other guy leaves and the guy finds that his own pack of biscuits was actually under his newspaper.

Dude its

Go on an exile or they'll kill you for blasphemy

Dude first go and actually see the movie before posting in this manner.

If you hate Bollywood so much, I sincerely request you to NOT watch Bollywood films

reply

i've decided not to even bother giving this movie a chance. this is due to a lot of pent up rage about what the director did to oldboy in that lousy POS he called zinda....

i can't believe that the biggest film industry in the world can't come up with good, original material at regular intervals. i grew up in bombay, and still can't stand bollywood!

except the b-movies. they rock.

reply

i am not defending plarism experts david dhawan, mahesh bhatt and sanjay gupta, but see films like

1 lagaan
2 jodaa akbar
3 swadesh

all of the above ashutosh gwarikar's films

4 taare zaameen pe
5 don 1977-2005 both versions
6 munna bhai mbbs, lage raho munnabhai
7 lakhaya
8 dil chata hai

heck munna bhai is SO damn original they are trying to remake it in hollywood! as Gangsta M.D

so hindi film industry does have its share of talentless hacks (dhawan) and talented directors (farhan aktar, asutosh)

but agreed that anything sanjay gupta does is 99% copied from korean or chinise or hollywood films kaante, zinda.. the list goes on

Don't waste your time watching Hindi movies if you can't appreciate it. Use your energy some place else, I am sure you will gain more out of it. This movie is a breath of fresh air with a very new concept very beautifully executed. The stories are meaningful and evoke a wide range of emotions from tears to happiness to anger to fear. It definitely doesn't take us for a ride around the trees and mountains like most of the other movies do. It falls right in the same bracket as Ek Hasina Thi and Daddy. So I am really not sure why are you wasting your time doing something you don't appreciate! Pretty sad!
