How is this compaired to Shenmue?

Similarities, Differences .....is the story good?

Thank you for you time.

It seems very alike to me, but very different. I just played and beat it last week, and here's what I think. The story is very good, although more brutal compared to the Shenmue series. There's still the heroic, and suprisingly kind hero, yet he's not afraid to bloody his hands. And he's a Yakuza with a past as one would have, compared to Ryu's more virtuous life.

The fighting system for Yakuza reminds me of Shenmue a bit, yet while Shenmue used alot of realistic martial arts moves and combos, Yakuza utilizes a fighting system more akin to street brawling, with hints of martial arts thrown in there. And the Chinese triad members only add on to that with their more art oriented fighting.

Yakuza also has alot of minigames like Shenmue had, yet they're not as fun. Not near as fun. While Shenmue had classic arcade games and such, Yakuza has so lame games, but the gambling can be kind of fun at times. I honestly like the characters ALOT in this game, and think they were well played out, although I think alot of the English voice acting could have been alot better. Then again, Japan takes their game voice acting more seriously, as can be seen by their big-name actors.

Either way, if you like Shenmue then you should like this, even though it's a good deal different. I'm really hoping Yakuza 2 will come across the sea, even though I'm sure Yakuza wasn't as big as it was in Japan as Like A Dragon.

Thanks for the info I definitely like the yakuza atmosphere, and I'm a huge fan of Shenmue.

Two questions.....Can you change it to the Japanese Language with English subtitles?
And does the game end unlike Shenmue 2?

Thanks for your time and response.

reply

Oh man, I'm not really sure about the language, but I'm pretty sure you can't. Which if I'm right, then it kind of sucks. English speaking countries just aren't passionate enough about their voice acting in games.

It does end, albeit open for a sequel, but it is a definete ending, compared to Shenmue's ending which is meant for the next chapter III. And of course they made another Yakuza, which I'm hoping will hit over here, or else I'm modding my PS2 and importing it from Japan.

I'm in a back log of stuff to play, so it will be awhile but with your recommendation {and my affection for Shenmue mixed with Sega fanboyizem} I'll definitely pick it.

I watched a trailer and it did look nice.

As for system chipping.....My Xbox is chipped and its the best investment I've ever made, there is no end to my joy with it. As for my PS2 I bought it chipped so I could play the 'Transformers' game they released over sea's, after I got the game {which did suck and blow strangely enough} two weeks went by and my brother broke my system never to be played again.

Meanwhile I have this crappy Transformer game that, even though its crap I would still like to play it, I can not.

Last year I bought a new PS2 which has a wealth of good stuff to play but I don't f I'm in a back log of stuff to play, so it will be awhile but with your recommendation {and my affection for Shenmue mixed with Sega fanboyizem} I'll definitely pick it.

Sorry for my ranting, be safe and well.

Remember the QTE in Shenmue 2 where you're NOT supposed to press the button? That took me uncomfortably long to figure out.
