Who was the old sniper?

Whenever BLS and NM went to visit the old guy, seeking 'wisdom', who was the guy? He kinda reminds me of Carlos Hathcock.

K, Carlos died in 1999, so obviously he couldn't have been in this movie. :-P

It was a guy named Levon Helm; he was in The Band. IIRC, he's not supposed to be a sniper, though. I think Swagger said he was a gunsmith.

Either way, he was awesome. "Still got the shovel" is the best line in the movie IMO.

That line and his scene for me stole the show!

He reminded me of my late Grandfather. Excellent scene indeed :)

Sadly, he passed away this morning. RIP Levon Helm!

Yeah, I saw that this morning, total bummer!

If you appreciated Levon Helm in this role, be sure to catch his cameo in "Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada."

You should also watch him in "Coal Miners Daughter". He sings Blue Moon Of Kentucky along with the radio. Awesome!

Levon Helm also played Ridley in the Right Stuff ( the guy that was Chuck Yeager's right-hand man on the ground). He was also the narrator in that film.

In the book, the character seemed to be based on COL Townsend Whelen or COL Charles Askins, both legendary gun writers/experts
