the 'makeshift silencer' myth to bust?

Although silencers are highly illegal, I don't see much difference with those and suppressors as far as noise but is it actually possible to silence a 22 with a plastic water bottle?

In the USA silencers are completely legal to own, make, buy and sell without a license unless it is done as a business, then you would need a license. I make silencers as a hobby; they are registered on the ATF form 1 along with paying a $200 tax on each. The ATF always approves the making or transfer of a silencer (or other NFA firearm) as long as the forms are filled out correctly.

A rifle chambered in 22lr with subsonic ammunition is easy to suppress, even with a soda bottle. The problem with using a large item like a bottle or an oil filter is that they block the sights and the first rounds are inaccurate as the bullets have to punch through the front end of the device.

I think the scene with him shooting off hand from the small boat was not realistic.

I agree your remark about shooting and so very accurately, from that small rowing boat. Not only once either! Surely that "platform" would have been way too unsteady for a vitally accurate hit?

I have heard that a potato stuck on the end of a pistol works well. Heard that from someone who, um, has done that.

My uncle shot a dear from 550 Yards in a row boat in Colorado

What a shame to shoot a deer that could row.

Then use a scope.

Thanks for saying what I was about to.

Even with real silencers, the sound difference is only around 15 db as I saw it in a Myth Busters-like tv show.

A homemade is probably even half of that!

A good silencer will reduce muzzle blast noise by about 30 decibels. I make registered silencers as a hobby that are every bit as good at reducing noise as commercially manufactured ones.
