I have an issue with this movie
I am a HUGE animal lover. Currently, I have 2 dogs, a German Shepherd, who we got as a puppy, and a Golden Retriever, she was my parent's and they are no longer able to care for her. We also have 5 cats, all rescue, and two parrots, that we have had for 16 years now. Before, we had a beautiful yellow lab, like Marley, named Rufus. Rufus was amazing and lived to be 13 (I wish they lived longer). We got him as a puppy and he was a pure joy, as are all of our animals. I think about him everyday.
So my issue is this:
Why didn't these people, obviously caring about their dog, learn about how to train him? Even a little bit?
When we got Rufus (our first dog) we crate trained him. I told the breeder, I could never put my dog in a cage. She said, if you are not prepared to crate train, you really should not have a puppy. Read up on it, get books, etc. We did, the crate was in the kitchen, and Rufus took to it. It had blankets, etc, the idea that they don't mess in their crate. Then, in the morning, you let them out and they learn to do their job, outside. Also, when you are out, you put them in their crate so they are safe and your home remained in one piece. As he got older I wanted to do away with the huge cage in the kitchen, but he'd get upset. Finally I replaced it with his bed in the same spot, and he was okay with that.
That whole garage scene when John comes in and Marley has taken everything apart? He could have killed himself, gotten into poison, or whatever. When you're not home, dogs need to be in a secure and safe place, especially puppies and young dogs who can't be trusted yet.
The training class was a joke. Dogs train with treats, not yelling or barking orders or pulling on a leash. I've been through training with Rufus, and Storm, our Shepherd. I get that this was for Hollywood, but it struck me as very unrealistic. Labs are smart, sensitive creatures. I'm not exactly a strict owner (my dogs could be better trained) but they aren't like that. I have to blame the owners, not the dog.Yet it seems they always say, oh, he is a terrible dog, the worst dog. But it's them!
I waited to see this film because I knew how it ended, and I didn't want to go through a repeat in my own life, reliving the day when we had to say goodbye to our own darling Lab. It's heartbreaking, and something that all responsible, loving owners must one day face. As it was I skipped the ending. I really like Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston, but I have to say this movie annoyed me, not because of them or their acting, but because the characters were so incredibly ridiculous when it came to training their dog, and blamed all the bad behaviour on the dog, when really it was the owners fault that their dog was so poorly behaved.
And, yes, I do realize that that was the point of the story, and that had Marley been properly behaved, they wouldn't have had a story. But still, they could have made some reference to that fact.
