Robert Downey jr. latino???

I see that Robert DOwney jr. is playing Steve Lopez Who in his family is latino?

reply

nobody. Steve Lopez is white anyway, so a white person playing a white person isn't a stretch.

reply

And anyway, it's called ACTING so it doesn't matter what one's ethnicity is.

So, George Washington can be played by Denzel Washington?

Jamie Foxx can play Abraham Lincoln?

And Russell Crowe can play Martin Luther King?

reply

Well RDJ did play a black dude in "Tropic Thunder".

reply

To set the record straight: Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. Latino means from the Spanish-speaking cultures of Latin America. Latinos can be of any race or any mixture of races.

reply

And I was just kidding.

I live in Texas, I'm well aware of the differences in culture.

reply

And Steve Lopez isn't a Latino anyway. He is of Spanish-Italian ancestry.

reply

dude chill steve lopez is whiter than robert downey. i think hes from spain or something. its fine because he played the part well

reply

I'm cool as a cucumber. God forbid someone make a joke about something on here.

reply

If Denzel Washington can pass for George Washington

Jamine Foxx can pass for Abraham Lincoln

And Russell Crow can pass for Martin Luther King....

then yes. Robert Downey Jr can pass for the real Steve Lopez who is and looks white. The only thing latino about Steve Lopez is his last name.

See for yourself, the real Steve Lopez looks more white than Robert Downey Jr. anyway.

reply

Mr., in latin america there are MILLIONS of white people. Having a latino last-name doesnt mean you have to look like Panchi Villa.
Anyhow, Robert Downey looks like an average guy in many latin american countries.

Lol OP needs to get an Education sure the journalist is Latino and he is White...

There's no reason RDJ shouldn't portray him

reply

"Lopez" is not a white name, its Spanish. Lopez may have a fair complexion, but he is Latino, not white.

And if a white person can play a Latino, why can't a black person play a white person? And now, Jamie Foxx is rumored to be up for the part of Frank Sinatra...so there you go...

What? Latinos are not white people???? LOL!

reply

ROFL @ "white name" ROFL @ Spanish not being white.

Smith is a white name, that must mean Will Smith is white!!!!

reply

What the hell is a "white name"????????????????????

reply

I once had a teacher named 'Terence White' and he was a full-blown black man.

reply

What is a "white name"? You realize that there are white, black, and Native American people with English last names like Smith, Jones, and Wilson, right?

It's the same deal with Spanish last names. The Spaniards, from Spain, who ARE white (from Europe, related to the French, Italian, British, and Irish), colonized Latin America. They forced their way of life on the indigenous people and also on the many African slaves they brought in. Now, there are many white, black, Native American, and mixed-race people in Latin America with Spanish last names. You're just used to seeing biracial Mexicans and Central Americans (indigenous Mesoamerican mixed with white Spanish) or triracial Puerto Ricans (indigenous Taino, black African, and white Spanish).

reply

Nobody.

reply

well Robert Downey Jr. got an oscar nom for playing a black guy in Tropic Thunder, so im sure he could pull off latino, but i don't think Steve Lopez was really latino.

reply

Downey wasn't playing a black guy in Tropic Thunder, he was playing an actor playing a black guy.

But--right now over on the Sherlock Holmes board someone is complaining because Downey looks too Hispanic/Italian too play Holmes! The poor man has no roles left!

reply

He was the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude!!

In Tropic Thunder, he was an Australian man playing an African-American man.

In Sherlock Holmes, he is playing an British man.

Here are some more cases....

Catherine Zeta-Jones is Welsh, but has played numerous Latina roles.

Lou Diamond Phillips played Richie Valens in La Bamba

Cheech and Chong were always thought to be mexicans. Cheech Marin is of Iranian descent, Tommy Chong is of Chinese and Scots-Irish descent

Al Pacino in Scarface portrays a Cuban.

Alfred Molina, of Spanish/Italian descent, has played all kinds of ethnicities, such as Iranian in Not Without My Daughter.

Natalie Wood, a Russian, playing Puerto Rican in West Side Story

Antonio Banderas was supposed to be an Arab in The 13th Warrior

Andy Garcia is Cuban-American,, and played Italians in Untouchables, Godfather III, and Hoodlum

Madonna (Italian-American) played Eva Peron in Evita

Don't forget Charlton Heston as Ramon Miguel 'Mike' Vargas...

So there ya go.

btw, "While ethnicity and race are related concepts, the concept of ethnicity is rooted more in the idea of social grouping, marked especially by shared nationality, tribal affiliation, shared genealogy/kinship and descent, religious identification, language use, or specific cultural and traditional origins, whereas race is rooted in the idea of a biological classification. In 1950, the UNESCO statement The Race Question, signed by internationally renowned scholars (including Ashley Montagu, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Gunnar Myrdal, Julian Huxley, etc.), suggested to "drop the term 'race' altogether and speak of 'ethnic groups'."

reply

Six years later and this is still the most impressive post I've read on IMDB thus far.

reply

Latino isn't a race. so what is the problem with him playing a latino?

reply

Latino is race its called HISPANIC duh

Don't surround yourself with yourself. Move on back two squares.

reply

LATINO IS NOT A RACE, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT, IT'S AN ETHNICITY LOL!

reply

Believe it or not, Latinos can look white. Some Spaniards look pretty white, as do some Argentinians and even (gasp!) some Mexicans. I'm Mexican and I look straight up white.

Spaniards are not Latino. Latino = Latin American

Spaniards are white. Many Argentinians are white as well. not just "look white"

reply

RDJ passes for a latino regardless of what race the real Steve Lopez is. I don't know about a gang banger from L.A but he was pretty "convincing" as far as playing a black person in Tropic Thunder even if it was a comedy and he "over-acted". I say as long as it's not a strech (black guy as George Washington) if you look the part why not play it.

reply

argentines are white cuz they are made up of europeans.. i should know lol i'm argentine with italian background
and spain is made up of white people..
and people from spain have names like lopez, garcia etc....sooo maybe steve lopez is from spain.........wow people today..
he could be from mexico or cuba too cuz alot of spanish speaking countries are made up of spanish settlers mixed with the indiginous tribes so some mexicans look whiter than others...

reply

Ok, you obviously didn't get what I was saying. I never said Spaniards were Latinos (by the way I'm part Spanish so I am aware of this fact, thanks) I was referencing Spanish speaking nationalities to make my point.
I was talking to the American readers on this board with the "look white" comment. Here, the stereotype is that if you're white you come from a Northern or Western European ancestry. That's what Americans mean by "white." I lived in Argentina for 6 months so I know there are white people there, too. My comments were directed at those who don't realize there are other "white" people in the world and it doesn't matter where they come from.

By the way, you seem like a pleasant fellow lol. Let's totally hang out

Lol, Spaniards ARE WHITE, some of them lighter than others, like what happens with Greeks, Russians or Italians.

HISPANIC means LATIN AMERICANS or NATIVES OF SPANISH-CONQUERED AMERICAS.
It's funny how Spanish people are thought to be of the same ethnicity of latin american guys in the States.

Spaniards have a bit of arab blood in them (they were ruled by the moors for a couple of years) hence the exotic look of some of their celebs like Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem or Penélope Cruz.

Argentinians, Uruguayans and Chileans are almost 100% white nowadays, since the Spanish conquerors gave the feisty native tribes of those lands the "English treatment": EXTERMINATION, that's why people of those nations have almost no trace of native american blood in them.

On the other hand, the rest of Latin America's tamer native tribes were enslaved but not exterminated, and eventually they paired up with the white minorities (mostly spanish), mixing their fenotype (ethnic looks) into what's commonly known nowadays as "latino", a couple of examples could be Andy Garcia, John Leguizamo, Danny Trejo, Sofía Vergara, Leonor Varela, Jennifer López, Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, Eva Longoria or "Che" Guevara.

Some latinos look even similar to the african fenotype since they got mixed heritage from native americans, whites and blacks, like Rihanna or Zoe Saldaña.

Some latinos can pass off as whites despite the fact that they have direct latinamerican descent, like Cameron Díaz, Christina Aguilera, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen, Andy Garcia or Guillermo Del Toro.

By the way, López is a Spanish surname, just like Hernández, Díaz, Aguilera or García.
Now, the fact someone has a Spanish surname doesn't mean he has direct Spanish descent. Just like some african americans with English surnames, natives from latin american land adopted Spanish surnames too.

All in all, genetics are pretty inconsistent, so all that ethinicity and race stuff is eventually becoming irrelevant nowadays. Still, that doesn't change the previous facts I pointed out. To sum it up: yes Downey Jr. could play a latino, despite the fact he has Scottish, Russian, Jewish, German and Irish blood in him. The native jews looked pretty similar to the arab people, so there you go why Robert has a bit of a "latino" look. Oh, and his real name should be Robert Elias Jr., which actually sounds pretty latino, but is actually Jewish.

Hope that clears this all up a bit.

now this is acting: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2458172160/tt1528718

Bwahaha! That was funny!! My last name is Romero and I'm a full blown white boy. People are still ignorant about this?!

reply

-- Smith is a white name, that must mean Will Smith is white!!!!

I JUST DIED! That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Thank you for that. LOL.

I also love the posters here who clearly don't understand the difference between races and ethnicities

Each time history repeats itself, the price goes up

reply

Steve Lopez is a white guy whose ancestors come from Spain and Italy. Some Spaniards and Italians can be a bit swarthy, but Steve isn't really. Robert Downey Jr. even appears to have a slightly darker complexion than the real Steve Lopez.

Sure, they could have chosen a white Latino like Andy Garcia to play Steve Lopez, but it certainly wasn't necessary. And having RDJ on the movie poster is more of a draw anyway :).

reply

Latinos and pretty much everyone in the whole American continent are a mixture of races, therefore we can be white ¿what's the problem with that? why is it that we're always looking a way to point out differences... Anyway the thing is that Robert Downey Jr. can play a latino a million times and Steve Lopez can be latino even if he's white... I'm latina and I'm white as milk

^_^

This is hilarious! My husband's grandfather on the paternal side was from Guatemala. Everyone else in his family Caucasian by way of European ancestry. Our last name is Palacios. Therefore my husband has a Latino last name and does not consider himself to be Hispanic, nor is he Latino.

Was that clear enough?

reply

Robert Downey Jr. can play any race. English man, Mexican man, African man, Ironman....

reply

*beep* latino can be white , indian, black, asian etc.
