Never go full retard jamie fox!

This movie reminded me of simple jack from Tropic Thunder. You ma ma ma ma ma make me happpppy!

You know, that's probably a really good point. His performance of schizophrenia was so good that it probably turned people off the same way that "going full (r-word)" does to audiences and critics. I don't think Jamie Foxx deserved to win any major acting awards, but he was still awesome in this movie. Plus, it makes you wonder about the politics for award voting that was satirized in TT.

P.S. The R-word needs to start becoming more taboo.

Um, the R-word IS taboo, that's why it was funny in Tropic Thunder. I wish "handicapped" had stuck--it is much better than "disabled" which can be confusing because some disabled people have remarkable abilities.

I find it weird how in american society, the regular use or abuse of a term make it politically incorrect after some time.
Black, retard, etc. All have been normal words, and with time people get over-sensitive on them and start using a new one..until the cicle repeats.

The new P.C. words sounds very silly to me - "large people" "vertically challenged" etc. Even "african american".
No offense intended, just find it kind of silly.

My exact thoughts. bump

Gabrielh-l, I COMPLETELY agree. The First Amendment guarantees me the right to say 'retard' if I want to. If someone takes offense, that's his/her problem.

Pretty soon it'll get to the point where all we can say is 'shucky darns' and 'fiddle-dee-dee.' Eventually THEY'LL be 'taboo' as well.

Count me in and well. I mean in 2006-07's box-office smash "Borat" the title character misunderstands "retired" said in a southern accent (they're down south)
for "retard", and the movie is BASED on this "Communist" overseas character';s typical misunderstandings of accents and culture here in the USA. Plus it doesn't matter at what era-----if it's said by the UNSAVORY or misinformed, then it's no different----so in short totally agreed. BY the way Foxx isn't completely "r-word" in the film------"I am Sam" and others have MUCH lower levels....and he was great, he deserved, after his one win for an earlier musical performance in 2004 in "Ray"(Charles) to win another for his violin playing in 2009!

Special, on the other hand, can mislead both ways: Retarded, special, etc. are always misleading. Special used to be mean normal but excellent, relatively, but for years it's meant handicapped or whatever.

You people completely misunderstand the "full retard" reference in tropic thunder. What Robbie Downey junior was talking about is that you never go full retard in a way that the retarded character becomes a person who could never really contribute anything to society. Fox's character in the soloist can contribute something to society, his music...

The real taboo in America(or western society in general) is the persons who are mentally ill and cant contribute to society, who cant live up to the American dream, who becomes a burden on others and who doesn't have some special skill or talent. We have a hard time sympathizing with a character that doesn't have a potential in a socio-economic kind of way.

so jamie fox did not go full retard in this movie

reply

I don't think that's true at all, given Sean Penn in I Am Sam was about his ability to RAISE A CHILD. That's not contributing something to society?
