It started in 1982? Something is wrong with that!

Paul says in his speech that Connor was 7 when his parents died ... We first see Connor and Jenny on his birthday 1982 "the Summer before Mom and Dad died" Ok, let's just assume that was his 7th birthday (they sure DID NOT look 7!) Flash forward to Junior High school dance and they have to be at least twelve (more like 13-14) ... But they were playing Safety Dance and there was a Michael Jackson impersonator! (The red jacket - white glove ... not the black jacket from Bad)

These dates seem way off.

I wouldn't care if they didn't try so hard to date it with clothes and music.

Well, Safety Dance and MJ (who died shortly after this film came out) were big hits in 1983. The dance is probably a few years later, where they play music that is several years old. When did the REO Speedwagon song come out-1989?

I thought the same thing about the kids' ages (and just posted something similar). But yeah, Safety Dance was a hit in the fall of 83. Jackson first wore the white glove in 83, but he wore a red jacket first before the black one (he wore red in Thriller).

It actually started picking up speed during that summer. I was in camp and my counselor brought the album Rhythm of Youth, which had that song in it, which she played over and over again. Then I heard it on the radio and thought, "Oh, is this bitch playing this song again?" Then I realized it was on the radio and a hit.

Hi Infidelity (REO Speedwagon) came out in 1980. Keep on Lovin You was number one for a week in 1981. It would have been half a dozen years old (?) at the time of the dance and probably known by the age group.

Songs in films don't necessarily mean they were hits in the same year that the scene it is played in takes place. At the dance, for example, the idea was to play an array of popular songs of that era. Maybe those were the ones they could get for the film?
In real life, by the way, at school dances, there is always an array of hit songs from several years. They don't just play current hits, but go back several years.
