Amazing non-PC speech early in movie

Some american military big-shot and an indian chief are sitting on a bearskin arguing. The american makes the point that indian tribes were killing each other and stealing land from each other long before the white man came. The perfect and peaceful indian world pre-white-man is a huge lie.

The American "military big-shot" was Col. Nelson Miles and the Indian chief was Sitting Bull. What Col. Miles said was true. What Sitting Bull said was also true. That's one of the major points of this movie....facts are facts and justification is justification (religious or otherwise). All peoples have warred against others, killed and stolen lands. "God wills it", "Manifest Destiny" or Wakan Tanka are used to justify both aggression and defense.
The idea that Native peoples lived in harmony with man and nature is some romantic hippie dream perpetuated by the movies (as is the notion that they were god-less savages, also perpetuated by the movies). Watch the film Reel Injun (2009) to see how Hollywood has shaped the public view of Native peoples.

Reel Injun was an excellent movie.

Yet before a white man camd here there was a billion natives north to south . Over a 100 million in America alone. Now only 2 'million and almost all the California tribes are extinct. Nice try
