Try out OldBoy, has the same sort of, one or a few against an army of bad guys, and a revenge story, but asian-style.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/

Another good one from Chan-Wook Park is Lady Vengeance:

The story for City of Violence kinda reminded me of the American film, Four Brothers, only alot better.

If you are just asking for Korean action films, then "Friend" is another gang buddy film:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0281718/

For great fights, but less brutal and more fun, try "Nowhere to Hide"

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0223530/

If you're looking for brutal martial arts, then you need to check out SPL, or "Kill Zone" as it was released here. It's a Donnie Yen/Wilson Yip masterpiece of action.

A Bitter Sweet Life is a good shout too.

Fighter In The Wind, if you want another Korean martial arts movie. Fighter In The Wind also have more action scenes than this movie.

Watch 'attack of the gas station'!

"THE Rebel"

Not realeased here for us Westerners to enjoy but, check out the trailer on youtube. I hear the action is freakin incredible.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0782154/

"Flashpoint"

Check out Flashpoint if you like SPL/Kill Zone and it also stars Donnie Yen.

"Chocolate"

The action is Brilliant in this movie (judging from the trailer). It's produced by the same team of Ong Bak and it stars some Thai actress. The lead actress is beautiful and she fights like no other woman I have seen before. The lead also does some pretty dangerous stunts and ends up pulling off Jackie Chan Worthy injuries.

You could view "Chocolate" trailer at this link.

I recently saw a korean movie called "Sunflower" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923714/) it was a really good movie like this. Another great Korean movie in the same vein is "Art of Fighting" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0496853/) . I highly recommend both of them.
Another film noir-ish movie that is very good is tajja (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0875025/) which is about the korean gambler culture.

Check them out if you can. If you don;t really like them at the very least you can watch 3 somewhat origional movies.

Fighter In The Wind was garbage. What really disappointed me is that the subject matter is so interesting, and a really good movie COULD have been made out of it, but the story is largely treated with all the flair and sensibility of a teen drama. You could argue this is fitting in the earlier parts of the film, which COVER Bae-dal's teenage years, but even then the story is too heavy and serious to be treated so lightly.

Oh, that, and the soundtrack. The soundtrack was *awful*.

I would point out Arahan as a truly great Korean martial arts film. Like City of Violence, it wears it's influences heavily on it's sleeve and successfully makes any cribbed material it's own. Meaning, it's obvious where something has been cribbed from a cinematic influence, but it's executed in such a way as to make the material new and/or different. A Bittersweet Life is also fantastic flick, though it is less referential towards martial arts films and takes more after noir flicks and John Woo movies. Very highly recommended films.

Try "Four Brothers" (2005) directed by John Singleton. It has the same feel and basic story outline, but with a grittier and more realistic tone. I would say to give this film a try if you liked The City of Violence.

reply

I agree with m_imdb-559:

FOUR BROTHERS is a great American (modern western) that is similary themed.

If you liked the action portions, then you should check out FLASHPOINT, which some of the other folks mentioned, and also INVISIBLE TARGET which has a ton of fun martial art sequences and over the top action. the KILL BILL series has its obvious similarities as well as any of the old Shaw Brothers produced stuff. The Shaw Brothers were pretty much the big film makers before Bruce Lee came along. Most of their plots were just like CITY OF VIOLENCE. It's also where the SB Logo comes from at the beginning of KILL BILL.

Kill Bills a similar one for sure. I always describe The City of Violence as a non *beep* Kill Bill

The Man From Nowhere. I just saw it a week ago, and it takes the mantle for best Korean action film made to date. The climactic battle surpasses anything in City of Violence.

reply

Totally agreed.

The Man From Nowhere was unbelievably good, and the final sequence nearly had me holding my breath. Very, very, very good movie.

On that note, this movie is also very similar to the new film with Gackt and Josh Hartnett, Buranku. The opening sequence with Kevin McKidd is almost too good for a simple description here, in fact words could not possibly justify how good that scene is.

reply

I Agree that Man on Nowhere is amazing. It's the finest action movie on Netflix streaming.

Thanks for the thread guys, got some good stuff to check out from this.

Just to add my vote, I saw The Man from Nowhere about 18 months ago and it was really fantastic - best Korean movie I've seen.
