The Korean Tarantino?

The DVD box suggests that the director, Seung-wan Ryoo, is the Korean Quentin Tarantino... something which is very near to the truth. "The City of Violence" is full of amazingly cribbed scenes and techniques from genres and directors as diverse as spaghetti westerns, Sam Peckinpah, Martin Scorcese, "The Warriors" and many, many others. It's a vibrant combination with a totally original feel, thanks to it's director's original take on it's material.

Keep in mind that Tarantino took a lot from classic martial arts films, so if "The City Of Violence" feels a bit Kill Bill-ish, that's influence of influence.

Halloween remake too violent for you? That's a shame. Go review the Bratz movie instead.

reply

You're correct. It's an unusual cycle... it's turning into a Worm Ouroboros.

reply

Seung-wan Ryoo does his own martial arts and choreographs it himself too. i like his films.

I'm pretty sure movie directors around the world are getting annoyed by being compared to Tarantino. Hell, I'm getting annoyed by reading his name or "Kill Bill" on every Eastern DVD package I buy.

reply

You have read my mind Max.

People say,"Evil prevails when the good do nothing". What they should say is "Evil prevails".

reply

I hate Kill Bill. This makes up for it with similar yet, in my opinion, much better fight sequences. Aside from a one hit wonder with Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino is a talentless, pretentious hack. I say stick to the genres he rips off.

reply

agrucha, you couldn't be more wrong Pulp Fiction was completely 100% original, Maybe he does have some influences for his other movies but who doesn't?

reply

100% original? that's hilarious!
i saw this great video link that was attached on an imdb forum and it showed A TON of different movie clips which 'pulp fiction' blatantly ripped off.

reply

Yeah, I've seen that video as well. And he's right, there are several parts where it's DIRECTLY lifted...not homage...not referenced...not inspired by...but stolen. Pulp Fiction is in no way 100% original.

reply

I'm not saying everything he's ever done is unoriginal, I'm just saying I think most of it sucks. He's style over substance all the way.

Hopefully the past 8 years has altered your perception of Tarantino. The man has been on fire after three straight classic films: Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. No doubt he's an amazing storyteller/writer.
