Remake

I'm so sad, why can't they just leave things alone why do they have to hunt other countries gems to try and do over.
I mean if you don't have the time to sit and watch the original then one doesn't need to see it.

Can you just get off that opinion for a second and actually look at what's happening in films?

Everybody's remade everyone. The world has been re-making each others' movies for decades. And since there IS a remake, could you try to consider it a compliment, and complimentary to the original? (Other movies too?)

For example, I loved the American version of The Ring, and was curious enough to rent (and enjoy) the original Japanese version. The American version of The Ring introduced that story to a wide English-speaking audience. Nowadays, most people know it's a remake and give credit where it's due.

I just finished watching Dirty Carnival and thoroughly enjoyed it! And c'mon. Honestly, a lot of it was derived from some American and Chinese movies. So what? I thought it stood well on its own. Can't wait to see the remake! I'll judge that one on its own merits - not just because it's a remake.

Relax, and just enjoy some movies for a change.

I have seen what is happening in films, laziness amoung writers, laziness amoung studios. Remaking others gems (and their own from years past) it's a very quick/easy buck.
You don't know me I do enjoy movies and this will suck, they will put a for now "it" actor in it.
BTW I saw "Ringu" before obviously way before. I'm not a noob at foreign films I've been enjoying them since I was a child. I didn't see "The Ring", I'm sure you and other thought it was amazing.
Also you relax~America does not need to put it's English-spoken spin on movies for them to be stamped approved.
We should be curious about our world neighbors and what they are doing in various fields anyway. Why wait for an American exec to say "hey hey look at this" before we prick our ears and eyes.

i agree with both of you. the reason why americans dont like watching foreign films is racism and not wanting to read subtitles. i live in texas and thats how it is for people i know. ill tell someone about these great movies and theyll ask what the title is and whatnot. after i tell them its asian, they immediately become disinterested. its strange. ive always thought, "a good movie is a good movie". i dont see why it matters that theres foreign people or subtitles.

as far as remakes. i just wish they would do a better job of remaking the movies. not use unnecessary cgi like in pulse and one missed call remakes. not use annoying trendy but crappy actors.

the remakes (post 2000) ive liked:

-the ring
-the grudge
-the eye
-the uninvited/a tale of two sisters
-shutter (was ok)

I don't think it's to do with racism per se, it's more to do with being sheltered. People are comfortable with what they know, that's just the way it is. Most people aren't raised to be open-minded and accepting of what they don't know or understand. Maybe through watching the remake they may gain some interest or insight into the original and Korean culture.

I do agree with OP though, it's pretty disgusting how people can just buy creativity and whore it out to make a quick buck.

actually i was raised to be open minded and aware of other cultures. im weird in that way. so i will agree with you there. lol

Here's a little pro-tip for ya: Don't like the idea of remakes? Don't watch them.

Remakes are not some form of desecration. Movies are made to make money. Do you think the the original film's makers resent them being remade? They're HAPPY to cash in on it a second time!!

As I already said in 2010 That's not the point. Because if the film is great it stops people from seeing the original but then again the reason this it is being remade is because---> ahmuricans don't like to watch movies made by foreigners. Why come they can't just speak ehngilsh. Don't like to read dem subtalks anyway. God bless ahmuricah and the flag and dems bald birds too!
Besides where is it? This thread was started in 2010 way before Oldboy remake and look how that turned out, a pile of Poo.

First, I live in the United States which has over 300 million people and I've NEVER heard anyone speak like that but I understand your jealousy. That would be like me saying that France is comprised of cowards that don't take showers, Everyone in England is arrogant and has rotten teeth, all Japanese men have small penises and hate women, Germans hate Jews, etc., etc. But whatever...

As far as remakes stopping people from seeing the originals, nothing could be further from the truth. People (from any country) that won't watch subtitled movies, just won't. If there is a remake, watching it MAY stimulate their interest enough for them to seek out the original. The film makers of the originals win both ways, by the way. Risk free money (which is what they're in it for).
