In the DVD audio commentary for The Reef, Mark A.Z. Dippe stated that the movie was a hit with theatrical releases in other countries. For example, he claimed that it was a "smash hit" and "one of the biggest movies of that time period" in Turkey and that in the Netherlands it beat the box office of several bigger studio animated films released there at the same time.
