Now it just doesn't seem right/possible that this could be better than the original but I just can't think of a reason why it isn't on the count of the graphical enhancement and added features.

Well, I didn't think that "Super Mario Bros. 1" was even the best game in the original series, let along the best game ever. "Mario Bros. 3" and "Mario World" were heightened versions of the first game, and I thought much better at the time.
