Who else knew who the killer was inside 15 minutes?

It was SO obvious.

reply

How was it obvious?

I didn't have a clue, but my son who was watching it with me said he didn't think was actually paralyzed.

reply

I got THAT feeling. You know, the one you get when watching a movie with a friendly, helpful, and seemingly benign friend character who makes sporadic appearances and always seems to be there for the troubled and struggling protagonist.

Of course he's the bad guy!

reply

I thought it was going to be the Cary Elwes character myself. He's already played one cop character who turned out to be the bad guy, after all.

reply

OMG, I think it took me 2 seconds to figure it out (though I really, really was hoping I was wrong)!

SPOILER...

I mean, seriously, a well known actor with such a small part? Tsk! And the fake handicap, c'mon now!!!

Good point. But the fake handicap only became fake to the audience after they revealed that he was the bad guy, right?

reply

Yeah, but it was so obvious that it was fake (been done too many times for anyone NOT to figure it out)! I mean, at least TRY to make it less obvious!

I knew from the onset that it was either Gary Elwes (hope I spelled that right) or him (purely based on the fact that they were the only seasoned actors that were suspect) and the split second I saw the wheelchair that confirmed it. If they didn't add that stupid element, it might have taken a bit longer to figure it out.

name an example?

reply

Not only well known actor, but I kept thinking if he did it :Was he really disabled and/or did he have partner? Was it the editing or the story telling that made know who the killer was?

yes the movies was "kiss the girls"...which was kind of a prequel to "along came the spider"...with the same character "alex cross" played by morgan freeman...based off books from james patterson...hope the make another alex cross movie...."violets are blues" was pretty *beep* awesome anyways sorry totally off subject..but Cary Elwes is great in that movie or any movie for the fact only true movie lovers appreciate his talent..other people would say cary who?

reply

I think you couldn't be more wrong. I don't think that he was portrayed at any point as the killer until the end.

Who else watched more than 15 minutes of this worthless movie, is the question!

You seem more than willing to spend more than fifteen minutes defaming it. Have you nothing better to do, Todd?

"Dick Laurent is dead."

reply

It was obvious because they wouldn't show a character for so long if they weren't important to the story.

reply

It was pretty clear who it was when they were having tea in his apartment. Look at the items above the refrigerator. Who puts *beep* up when they can't reach it. It would have been hilarious if a white cat walked into the room. I'm still watching the film - only about half way through it and its horrible. Also Dushku is a horrible actress!

reply

How could anyone KNOW who the killer was from the movie? Thus far, NO ONE has been convicted of any of these murders. That was just a fictionalized part of the movie, and really just a red herring. At the end it even tells you that it is still unsolved.

reply

Dude, are you serious? The movie was LOOSELY based on the actual murders. They spelled out who the killer was and just explained at the end that he had never been caught - everyone that watched knew who it was.

reply

Dude???? I guess I just don't make assumptions like most (as in the movie or that I am a dude, which I am not). Just because the Timothy Hutton character confessed meant nothing. Look at the Zodiac or Black Dahlia cases. Innocent people (for many reasons) do confess to crimes for which they have nothing to do with. Especially those with mental illnesses.

people call everyone dude now its not gender specific but whatever.. the point is in the realm of the movie he was the killer so therefore the OP saying that the killer in the movie is obviously the killer from the beginning is a valid opinion.

reply

I know this is old, but every opinion is a "Valid" opinion, because it is just that, an opinion, doesn't mean the OP is correct.

reply

Yeah.

reply

I have to disagree..I'm pretty good a predicting movies i take pride in it...now since I went into this thing knowing that it was a true story and that the killer had never been caught..I was expecting them to never reveal the killer or maybe just hint towards it like they did with the movie Zodiac. So I never was really trying to guess the killer...but a few people did pop in my mind...for some reason the bartender...crossed my mind....bill mosely's character mainly because i didn't think his part would be so short so i thought he would end up popping back up towards the end...the sheriff was kind of to obvious....and the really i thought they were going to imply the priest did it but weren't going to actually say he did...so when timothy hutton turned out to be the killer...in my opinion was the best part of the movie... but to quote "The Dude" thats just like my opinion man...

I had no idea for the first bit of the movie. Then after the meeting when she is at the diner with him and they're talking about math and how she was practical, it peaked his interest. I had a STRONG feeling it was him from there. However, I was exhausted when I watched this so I kept falling asleep and having to go back to scenes so after a while I had no idea who it could be. I thought it was a good movie, I would have recommended it. I'd never heard of it until I saw at a local redbox, it interested me as it's based on a city only 2 and a half hours or so from me.

reply

The biggest clue on who the the killer was was during the first group meeting. Hutton says something like "and that is when I put myself in this chair, and now my brother is dead." Got me thinking that he was not in the chair for medical reasons but because he used the chair as a way to punish himself for the guilt of his brothers death.

reply

Well, I've just seen it a few nights ago (without looking at IMDB first), and I thought it was TOO obvious the wheelchair charactor was the killer and changed my mind (so in fact I was wrong). Maybe I've seen too many Columbo episodes in my life, but a charactor that pops up and knows a lot and gives advice is always in the pot for bubbling suspicion.

reply

i agree it was obvious for 3 reasons:

1)Richard was way too nice and understanding. The kind aura that his character gave off was clearly a device to throw the audience for a loop.

2)Meg confided in him and trusted him at random times in the movie... there was no need for his character really unless you wanted a surprise ending. she could have just as easily gone to harpers house and chatted with him about all the details of the case.... but no.. she went to the random mentor/parylized loveable guys house... hence the "surprise"

3)Tim Hutton is probably the most notable actor in this movie... i dont think they would cast him as a side character who has no real purpose in the story other than to console the chick.

reply

I wasn't sure, but I said to my lady while we were watching this, "If Hutton's the killer, it's going to be way too convenient. That would suck."

Sometimes I could kiss your mind, Roy.

I did not pay attention to that scene, I will watch that part again. I was too caught up with Megan's illness.

I did not fully believe it was the priest at the church, thought that would be too predictable. I did believe it had to be a teacher or someone like that, so when Hutton's character turned out to be a tutor I was like "I knew it, I knew it". I liked the twist honestly.

I'm surprised anyone paid enough attention to figure it out. I kept walking in and out of the room. Could not keep my attention on this movie.

reply

He became at least someone who could have done it, but the wheel chair kept viewers off balance. It also was starting to become obvious when the film uses a major star to be a sporadic character with little to do in the first half of the movie. I kept thinking when will they bond or when will he or she make a move on the other but the film never went in those directions. The camera never really focuses on his face as they do for the real killer and that was how they kept him from being suspected.

reply

I said right after they listed Timothy Hutton as the last credit in the opening that he'd end up being the killer. I did change my mind after he appeared to be in a wheelchair though. It is kind of cheap to make him appear to be handicapped. Very unlikely that anyone would be able to pull that off realistically as long as he would have had to.

3/10.
