Taylor Lautner's line

Taylor Lautner's character's girlfriend gives him a shirt, and she urges him to put it on, and for some reason he says "I'm a little uncomfortable taking my shirt off in public". This doesn't seem to serve any purpose story-wise, so I interpreted it as a reference to Twilight (where all he seems to do is to rip his shirt off every 5 minutes).

Any thoughts?
