If you read some of the nasty posts on the boards, you will get why they are doing this.
I think that's a *beep* excuse. A handful of boards, mostly for recent big blockbusters, attract trolls. But so what? They can be ignored, blocked and moderated with abuse reports. The vast majority of boards I visit are nothing but civil discussion, theories, explanations and interesting facts that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Shutting everything down is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Some of it is a bit Wild West, but that's part of its charm. There is nothing else like this on the internet - boards for every film, actor, actress, director, cinematographer and best boy. Where else can you watch an obscure 70s anime and ask questions and find interesting discussions with fellow cinephiles?
If they really wanted to, they could ramp up the moderation on problem boards i.e. the biggest blockbusters around their release. But I think everybody knows trying to push everybody onto social media is about advertising and revenue; you're very naive if you think this is about protecting people's feelings.
