1 Million ratings still 8.6

Congratulations to Interstellar for hitting and surpassing the 1 million vote mark. It's good to see the rating remains at a solid 8.6 after dropping from 8.9 in its early days. I know people will harp on about how Nolan fanboys give perfect 10s on sock accounts to artificially rise the rating but honestly I dont think it has a huge effect given the sample size is now 1 million. And there are also a lot of Nolan haters who will automatically give this a 1.

All in all I think the 8.6 score is a deserved testament to how well received this film was to the general worldwide audience even though it got mild reviews from critics. I still think Interstellar will go down as one of the best sci fi classics in decades to come.

Well deserved IMO. I have seen this three times at the IMAX now, each time it was packed out and with ovations afterwards. The last time was a charity screening requested by a family devastated by cancer as the film was special to them.

People talk about Nolan fanboys like it means vote manipulation - but we're talking a director of immense talent and intelligence who started out as a small time indie director. We're not talking Justin Bieber here - Nolan has fans because he makes great films.

On that note, the moaning you find on IMDb et al seems a lot to do with tall poppy syndrome. If he was still making small time films of the same quality as Interstellar you wouldn't hear a negative word, and all the ludicrous 1 star ratings. But people like to over-scrutinise and tear down successful people. At the end of the day, all his films are critically acclaimed. All are in the IMDb top 250. Says it all.

1% of voters gave it a 1.

To give it a 1 is lunacy. It is definitely not a 1. A 1 means it has no redeeming factors what-so-ever.

37% of voters gave it a 10.

To give it a 10 is lunacy. It is definitely not a 10. A 10 means it is faultless. It's a solid movie, I'll give it that, but it is definitely not without it's faults. I won't go into them again, as they have been discussed ad nauseum, but if you remove the 'lunacy' 1's and the 'lunacy' 10's, you end up with a 7.9, which is probably more realistic.

Interestingly, the top 1000 voters gave it a 7.8!

Both of these ratings strike me as more 'appropriate' in my opinion.

Thanks for pointing those stats out, I hadn't paid attention to those.
I think people have different criteria on what a 10 (or thereabouts) score represents. By one standard, a perfect score can only go to a movie with minimal technical and scriptural errors. Others may value entertainment more weight bearing on review. I gave this film a 10 knowing there are a lot of faults, but the overarching story and brilliance of individual scenes make up for the shortcomings imo. If I was being super critical, your right I would probably give it around the same score as the top 1000 voters which I think is a fair enough estimation from a neutral ground.

Yeah, I understand that 10 is subjective, but that also means that the rating (generally) on the IMDB is meaningless.

There are 'fan boys' (personally I hate the term as pejorative, but will use it here as a 'catch all') or 'hate boys' who will up/down their own rating of it, or will vote with emphasis due to emotive reasons rather than really look at the overall and rate it accordingly.

I've discussed, and thought about how to rate movies a lot in my time, and even though I do that, I still give it a bit of a 'gut feeling' rating.

Having said all that (and thank you for your comments in support) I think that the 'top 1000 voters' would be the best way to go to get a realistic view on what a movie should be rated. They clearly 'vote a lot' so get rid of a lot of the knee jerk kind of ratings.

At the end of the day though, if 7 billion people rated this movie 'the best movie in the history of mankind' and 1 person said 'nup, it's the worst' their opinion STILL isn't wrong :) (although, I'd argue that they are probably just being cantankerous).

When I gave some movie 10/10. It doesn't mean they are perfect but it more about personal prefernace also doesn't mean they are lunacy, they are some people who really love it and if you look on some other movie above this one, you will see a lot of movie which is not perfect and yet most of people still give it 10/10. This deserve 8.6 rating compare to how a movie like those have the same rating.
-Life is Beautiful (8.6)
-The Intouchables (8.6)

I don't think a 10 necessarily means "faultless" - what film could be universally considered faultless? There are people on the Citizen Kane and Godfather boards doing their predictable "worst movie ever" schtick - you can't really have an objective analysis of any film.

I gave it a 10 because it was my favourite cinema experience ever - the music, the 70mm IMAX, the narrative, the emotional resonance, the awe and wonder. That doesn't mean I think the film was faultless, but for me it was as close to a faultless cinema experience as I've ever had.

But then you've got nowhere to go. What if something better comes along? Will you go back and reduce this to 9?

Maybe you will. Probably you wont.

So, the rating will stay artificially high.

reply

Unless you know for a fact that everyone who gave the film a 10 did so disingenuously, you can't claim that the score is "artificially high". I gave it a 10 because it is a 10 for me. For all you know that's how it is for everybody else that did so.

You can see my ratings - I don't just blindly go giving films 1s and 10s.

reply

10 rated movies are my favourites, doesn't need to be "perfect" as the word's definition itself is not really achievable. I have the score reserved for The two Godfather films, Inception, Schindler's List and Interstellar for now.

10 means 9,5+, there is room for minor faults.

Personally, I gave it an 8, I could probably go up to 9 on a rewatch - 10 is probably out of the question.
