Not so bad IMO

I just don't understand how EVERYBODY hates this one. Less than a month after its release R & J 's box office is 1 000 000 $ (CAN). So it looks like some people like it a bit... I'm among them, sorry !

I think the reason its made so much money up until now was because everyone was curious to see the two people selected for the main roles. It's because of all the publicity. King Kong, for example, was like one of the worst movies I've ever seen and it was one of the most money making movie of 2005... the gross has nothing to do with the quality.
Besides, the reason it is hated is because it, from a cinematographical (I'm not sure of that word w-ever) point of view, it IS bad. It was poorly written, poorly edited, had no storyline at all, and the actors were terrible. Even Piere Curzi, who is usually very good, sounded bad in that movie. Sorry.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is obviously the worst adaption made, out of all the ones made so far. Even Shakespeare in Love was better - and it wasn't entirely R+J.

But it is still an enjoyable movie, in someway. If you don't take this movie too seriously (cinematography-wise) you will like it. I'm not saying LOVE IT, but like it. No offence to Canadian/Quebequese here, but can you expect more from a Quebequese movie ? I never liked them, and I thought this was slightly better than the usual crappy stuff they give us.

You mustn't have seen many quebecer movies...

I thought of it and I think maybe if it hadn't been supposed to be Roméo and Juliette, it would've been better, simply...

I think you're right. If this movie wasn't entitled "Roméo et Juliette", people wouldn't make a big of a deal out of it. But the title makes all the difference because this is THE greatest love story ever known (whether you like it or not) so it is very harshly judged. Shakespeare's tale is praised for being perfect and flawless, so people expect a masterpiece when they hear "Romeo & Juliet".

Well I think it's mostly because we tend to compare the movie to the story of Roméo & Juliet and it doesn't really work... of course that movie showed some weak points but it's not all that worse.

First: Québecois(e).
Second: Quebec has made probably some of the best Canadian movies. Have you seen C.R.A.Z.Y.? If not, I strongly suggest that you do.

I really enjoyed it. I actually saw it twice in theatres. The acting and plot weren't the best, but they were pretty decent, especially considering that it was both of the main actors' first movie. It was better than the Baz Luhrmann version, IMO.
