Halifax?

I was in Halifax once a week back in 2000 whilst working on a cruise ship. I thought it was a lovely town. I used to jog from the docks up to the fort on the hill (they had a quick scene there near the end) & also shop down in some college area. Got some great memories of Halifax.

Is it really as rough as depicted in the film. Obviously I know that its just a movie but I never sensed anything there other than 'nice'!

yeah there's a fair amount of violence for such a small town but it's seldom random. It's drug related mostly. there've been swarmings lately too with groups of young people beating on people.

The locals don't like to talk about it as tourism is a major industry, but they have an ugly racist underbelly. Locals should know what I'm talking about when I write *beep* hill" and for sure, as someone with family from there, I can tell you that there is a certain "they are very friendly and hospitable if you are white" feeling just like in the American south. To be fair to Halifax, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be, but for sure in the 70s, 60s and before that, neighbourhoods were segregated and there was lots of racial violence as well as the occasional race riots. Check out the book, "Halifax Champion: Black Power in Gloves".
