book vs movie

In the book the action takes place in the 1950s and is set in Canada. In updating the plotline remains the same, but the change in time and place may explain some of the "incorrect according to present day values" that pop up. I'm sure it was much easier in the 1950s to take a baby from a hospital. Also, it was easier to hide out in rural Canada then. The story may have made the papers, but notice that there is no TV shown anywhere in the film. No 24 news channels. No Greta, Geraldo or Nancy Grace prowling around.
