I wasn't sure why the horse kept returning to the property, and why she kept seeing the wolf who was guiding her where to go? Also, when she fell and hit her head, she woke up covered in a blanket. I don't understand that part?

The horse and wolf were her spirit guides, and were trying to help her to understand the visions she was seeing so she would get the "message" before it was too late. They lead her to Wounded Knee, hoping she would connect to the spirituality of the sacred burial ground...but she failed to hear anything, and refused to follow the medicine man's advice to purify herself by going on a sweat. If she had, the visions she was seeing would have been completely clear instead of blurred and muffled. Fortunately, she paid enough attention to what she saw to know what she had to do in the end to save herself.

Who covered her with the blanket? The blanket was the same one that was on the couch just inside the door, and the door was left proped open after Shayla fell, so it's possible the horse did it by reaching his neck through the door. (after all, he went through the trouble to get up on the porch)

But it more likely was the wolf, who was the medicine man in shape shifter form.

Very impressive answer! Thanks so much for putting so much detail into your reply. I definitely liked the movie, and much more so now that I understand it more clearly.
