Silly questions about the ending *spoilers*

So... why exactly did Freeman attack them with a knife? He merely didn't want his career to be ruined, or had he actually had something to do with the murder he pinned Sam Whiteshirt with?
Also, what exactly did he do in order to frame the Whiteshirt boy? And what's with the knife? I didn't get that.

Jonathan Freeman attacked his victims with the same knife he picked up from Robbie Whiteshirt's older brother, who had threatened Shayla earlier. Jonathan pocketed this knife at the time because he knew it could be useful leverage against this dangerous man if necessary.

When Shayla could not be dissuaded from turning Jonathan in, he knew his life would be ruined. Rather than face the loss of everything he spent his entire life working toward, he decided that doing away with Shayla and framing the older Whiteshirt was the only way out. With a solid alibi of having taken a flight out of town (one can assume he made the six-hour drive back by car), Whiteshirt's threatening behavior, and Whiteshirt's fingerprints on the knife, Jonathan expected an open and shut case.

What did Jonathan do to frame the younger Whiteshirt? It was explained in the argument during the funeral. It was revealed that he paid off a witness to provide a stronger testimony than the witness actually had. Jonathan was sure the younger Whiteshirt boy was guilty, and so paying off a witness would enable "justice" to be served faster and put Jonathan in good with the victim's husband, who was a person of influence.
