This movie would still has some holes even if Kimberly Brown was in it

I rewatched it on HULU and I have some issues besides lack of Kimberly Brown.

1) No Sophie.
I get it that this could have been because of the actress herself but Sophie was like the unsung hero of the first halloweentown. It's almost like they didn't know what to do with teenage Sophie.

2) No Grandma.
Aggie was only in the film for a couple of scenes in the beginning. And then the whole storyline that Splendora was really Aggie. So Aggie was the queen of Halloweentown? In past films, Aggie always talked about the Cromwell line but it seems to me that she was the only Cromwell in centuries.

3) Ethan as the love interest?
Why? It didn't make sense that Marnie would be blushing around him since she was gaga over another guy in Halloweentown High. Lucas with Kimberly would have looked weird.

4) The mom as the empty nester
I feel bad for this character. She is always portrayed as lame in the beginning and then super cool by the end. She is a cool character but having her as the worried mom for the majority of the movie...I don't know.

4) Sara Paxton
If Kimberly Brown had to be replaced, it's weird that Sara Paxton was chosen. She had brown hair but she still had blue eyes. She might as well had stayed blonde because she still seemed out of place. They could have just made a different movie in the same Halloweentown universe.

I always felt it was done wrong from the beginning. Kim returning would've been a delight yet it still would be dreadful. Instead of going the route they did I would explore the themes of part 3 more of what a world that knows the existence of monsters was like. Maybe there would be tension between the world or leading too another war?

Another aspect is Marnie being in a love triangle with Cody and Luke who both try too win her affection while she becomes a worlds advocate?

Now Dylan and Sophie wouldwould be perfect hero in waiting. Maybe they save there family from the government or even have too stop kalibar Jr from turning the world in to his evil paradise.

I know Disney would never tackle anything like this but I feel so far it would be closer too fix many plotpoints left in the air and a more natural progression from three without going return's route.

That would have been a great idea and have been a good progression from the other films. Plus be nice to bring back Luke and Kal Jr. to wrap up those storylines. Though I feel like Marnie and Luke were always just friends don't see a love triangle between them. But could use them as opposing sides in a brewing conflict to give her a direct tether to someone fully in both sides.

I think with "Return" they were trying to showcase Halloweentown more, because a lot of people complained about lack of it in part 3. With the school I think they also wanted to show a different part to Halloweentown as well and continue Marnie's progression with both school and learning to be a witch.
However, with having a new lead actress and a new setting without hardly any of the familiar elements from the prior movies made it feel seperate and generic. I thought the movie was decent as it was, but agree with OP would have been better as either it's own original story with new characters set within the Halloweentown universe or else an entirely new film/series its own. Think it would ahve been much better received as well.
