Just saw this: Beautiful, poignant film!

This movie really affected me. It is a beautiful piece of work and the acting is superb.

I cannot believe how many hateful, petty posts there are on this board.

History aside... this movie is about LOVE and the power of the written word. It is ART. It is humanity at its best and at its worst.

I agree with all your comments. The film is a piece of art and so beautiful. Brian Percival did a masterful job and deserves much more recognition than he has received. If you have not read the book, give yourself a life-changing experience and read it. Or, listen to the audio book. I have done both.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good...

Thank you. I will read the book!

I also loved it.
The acting was great by the entire cast.
The lead was superb.

I agree this was a very lovely and moving film. I've always been fascinated by war films that capture the events from the POV of a child and this is among the best of that particular subgenre (the fantastic Empire of the Sun being the very best, IMO). Superbly acted by all involved, beautifully filmed, and a very emotionally affecting ending, even if the concluding portion felt a tad rushed.

Movies this good are why they invented cinema.

Indeed. You might call it the Curse of IMDB.

A very large number of posts on IMDB come from people who - because they have appropriate, low level, reading and writing skills - apparently believe that they are thus empowered to expose their lack of critical, artistic and philosophical perception to the rest of the world.

I agree that The Book Thief is a beautiful film. It is beautiful to look at and sensitively acted. And it shows how hope and goodness can survive in even the most difficult and dark circumstances.

It was well done, and a lot of people seemed to miss that it was the story of how the lead character went from illiterate orphan to accomplished writer. I think what people are complaining about is that it was a WW2 and Holocaust movie where the worst injury is a skinned knee playing soccer and people only die while they are asleep and unaware.

I think the film is great even after the second time I have seen it,
