The book was beautifully written and I was quite curious to see how they handled the voice of Death. In my mind it worked out better than I anticipated. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the movie did a creditable job with the book portrayal.

I was really surprised to learn it wasn't Jim Dale... he does lovely narration and it sounded like him. He did the Harry Potter audio books, but also narrated the television show Pushing Daisies.

Me too it was so soothing

I really didn't like it, it was the only thing about the film that I didn't like. It just didn't seem to fit, to me.

I agree. There was an air of cynicism and scorn for these beautiful people as if Death was taking everything too lightly. Hated the voice.

I was worried after hearing the book was made into a movie because narratives don't go very well from the page to the screen, usually. But the tone of the movie made it feel effortless and a part of the story so it worked perfectly here. I guess people who don't think so are not big readers who are not used to narrators.
Roger Allam was a perfect choice for Death.

Yeah, great voice. And he's really good as the young Morse's sergeant in the BBC "Endeavour."

reply

Yes, he has a great voice (he reminds me a bit of the late John Wood who was just brilliant -- with a voice filled with melancholy and wisdom). And Endeavour is fantastic.

It's what made the movie much better for me. I love narration as a storytelling tehnique in any movie, but in this one it really added a special touch.

It threw me off a little because it sounded a lot like Geoffrey Rush to me.

Especially liked his line at the end about Hitler...."met him once, than again, I meet everyone once".
