What happened with him? In the movie it said his "friendship lasted as long as Liesel...almost" So that means to me that they were just FRIENDS until he died. If she lived 91 years he probably only died a few years or months before. From the board I'm getting that the book stated he died and them meeting up never happened, the minute he left the house he was discovered and eventually killed.

Also friends can be lover so for those hoping that they eventually became a couple there's that but I doubt that.

I wish I can go back in time and pinch those chubby little cheeks and tell you nothing will be ok.

They do meet again in the Steiner's shop, it's almost exactly the same in the book as the film. One difference in their story is that she does see Max in the group of Jewish man being traipsed through the streets.

This kinda theorizes Max's future.
