When did she die?

If Liesl was 90 when she died, she must have died in the near future but not at the present time.
I thought she was about 9 in 1938 when her mother went away so that would have made her about 85 when the movie came out.

Hmm...that's most curious. You could be right. I suspect some artistic liberty was taken with her age. If she was 90 when the movie came out at 2013, that'd make her approximately 14-15 years of age.

The actress herself at time of filming and/or release was around 13 years of age.

She looks younger than that though, but given the increasing scarcity of food, and lack of nutrition at that time in Germany, that may account for her smaller size and more youthful appearance. I wondered about it too. Good question!

Well, when the movie started she was supposed to be 9 in about 1938. The actress was older because she played the same girl over a period of several years. She must have been around 16 when the war ended.
But to be 90 in 2013 she must have been born in 1923 which would have made her already 15 in 1938 and an adult when Germany was being bombed but she was still clearly a young teen.

I was wondering the same thing. She must be about 10 in the film, so this would mean she was born about 1928. Given she died at 90... that means she is still alive now with a couple of years still to run!

The character wasn't based on a real person so for the purpose of the story they wanted to show that she lived a long life. Plus it is death narrating so he does know these things.

reply

Indeed. For all that we know death could be telling the story from the near future. This is nitpicking on a very beautifully set movie. Very good story, with excellent framing.
