Why did this only get a 49% on rotten?

It really is a terrible film. It's sugary, sentimental and superficial.

One fairly strong indicator of how poor it is is the absurd use of spoken English with German accents. This is a ludicrous device as it makes no sense dramatically at all. Either, a) use German and subtitles, or b) just use English. But English with German accents is just nonsense, especially when background characters are speaking German, and the main characters occasionally throw in a German word like "nein" amongst the English! They really should have thought that through, it sounds ridiculous.

reply

First of all I do not think the English with German accent took away from the film at all. Secondly, I thought of the endless movies made on this subject and felt that this one was told with a unique view. The performances were excellent especially Leisal's and her adoptive mother. I rate movies by a "waste of time" principal This movie is far from being a waste of time. If you have not watched it then watch it. I promise it's not a waste of time.

reply

If you were impressed by this then I have some old essays to sell you.

You'll find it exquisitely refined literature.

reply

I've seem some "waste of time" principals, but I think you mean "principle"!

reply

Totally agree.

reply

^ This!

reply

I agree, and the terrible thing too was that the accents sometimes slipped too. I wanted to like this movie, but I didn't feel invested in the characters, and found the whole movie to be quite shallow and tedious. I am surprised at the 7 plus rating it has here on IMDB.

reply

Totally agree.

reply

Okay well Schindler's list did the same thing, so not all spoken English with German accents are bad films.

reply

you are right. And for me, it's the one thing that spoils an otherwise fine film. It sounds ridiculous having Fiennes, Neeson et al speak in cartoon "baddie" accents (like those embarrassing war movies of the distant past). It's not defensible on any level.

My God, it's full of stars!

reply

I agree Schindler's List is a horrible movie. because i should have read 90% of the movie instead. I would rather have English actors learn German. Than focusing on making a good movie.

reply

Watched the movie last night and have to agree with the first poster. For one thing, the girl playing the lead was a terrible actress. Her positive attribute include being pretty and able to speak with a German accent. She was expressionless most of the time. She had no subtle nuances of facial a expression or vocal quality. Even her physical responses were completely bland and blah. I could just hear the director say, "ok now hug him. Now run". Nothing to indicate emotion.

I did not read the book (and the movie sure didn't make me want to) but I'm wondering 1. What happened to her mother and 2. What happened with her and the burgermeisters wife after their emotional hug near the end. I hate it when things are thrown in for emotional value

Re the accents: one school of thought is that expressed by the person who thought that it's absurd to have German characters speaking among themselves in German accents. The other school says that if you don't use an accent, the audience will think of the character as American and not get into the idea that the actors are supposed to be German. Since the actors chosen probably don't speak German, the only solution would be to hire German actors--who may not speak English and therefore would need an interpreter on hand to translate direction. What a mess. I think I can accept the accents.

reply

It's a film primarily for English markets and if they all spoke english then it would look silly. Max wouldn't stand out as being different and some of the actors / actresses were German so they would have a german accent so people would just be left confused as to why only some people had a german accent.

reply

The word that comes to mind is "treacly" and I felt that the crafting of the film was trite at best. From just watching the 1 minute trailer, I got all the plot points and discern all the stock characters. I wasn't so bothered by the inconsistent use of accents/language, but I was especially irked by the whimsical (Harry Potter-esque) narrator/Death. Only knowing that the movie was apparently aimed at younger audiences made it passable (for me), so I gave it a generous 6/10.

reply

Wrong question. How on Earth does it (currently) get 7.7 on IMDb?

reply

I would like to know that too! This movie was terrible!

reply

yup. i was asking that myself.

reply

If it was so terrible, why do you bother to come on these boards and read/talk about it? I will never understand posters like you. If you dont like a movie, dont watch it. Dont come here and try to sh*t all over it because you have nothing better to do.

reply

I'll tell you why. People seek out others who share their point of view. It's human nature. It makes us feel good to discuss things with like minded people. Some people just like to argue, but discussion boards are for discussion, not for heaping praise on movies. If you want to heap praise, or read praise just go to the review section."If you dont like a movie, dont watch it." is a pretty weird statement. You can't know if you will like a movie until you watch it and it can take sitting through the whole thing to come to a conclusion. I don't understand people who come to discussion boards who clearly don't believe in discussion.

reply

It's much more simple: They come and tell you it's sh*t so that you'd believe it's sh*t and therefore rate the next movie that is sh*t lower. And when it's rated lower, then they won't waste time watching it.

Quality control.

reply

I thought this movie was very touching and if people paid more attention to the story instead of picking apart stupid little accents and nuances of the english language they would get more out of it. It was a great story IMO!!

reply

I cried at the end of it

reply

I cried at the beginning of the movie because I had wasted 10 minutes of my time watching it.

reply

haha, exactly. and i agree with sc_taylor on the language choice and how it was carried out.it is either german spoken in that era or english, in which case it will have to be a plain british accent NOT a german one, then the obvious supposition by the viewer would be that it stands for german. and no for "germanizing" the english language to convey such a simple idea.

reply

I guess this means rotten tomatoes is more reliable than imdb.

reply

huh, what kind of logic do you use?

I loved it. Fresh, original. Well acted. Should be rated at least a 9. And isn't Rotten Tomatoes mainly for the action, super hero, cartoonie, horror kinda movies? That crowd wouldn't like anything but a certain genre.

reply

Since around the mid-00's I have noticed that the difference in opinions between critics and audiences has become more frequent. IMDB, RT, and Metacritic all have solid ratings for this movie as far as the fans are concerned. Critics did not seem to care for it.

Well, the Nazis were terrible. Are they cliche? No. They existed and what they did was real.

The fact is many people find this period of history fascinating.

reply

Because Rotten Tomatoes have no clue what master piece they've watched.
I rated it 10 stars on the imdb. It's an A + movie. Steven Spielberg couldn't have done it any better.
What I simply don't understand is why imdb users rated this wonderful master piece only 7.6 stars.
For me this is a 10 stars movie and there are only very few similarly good films around.

reply

even in it's own genre it is only mediocre. there are literally 100s of movies like this.
